Default trying to hook up two computers too internet problem

have WIRELESS ROUTER NET GEAR WGR614 it has four ports ok I also have a modem with one port now my computer is hooked up to the modem and router my wifes computer is in the other room she has a wireless thing plugs into her computer it is also netgear we had problems with it for past 2 years her computer is real slow.
I just went out to staples and bought a 25foot cable for the router it is called RJ45.
I pluged it into my router and then into the back of my wifes computer.
now I also onpluged the wireless netgear thing that was pluged into a differrent port on the back of her computer now i turned on her computer and I can not get onto the inernet and it did not show anything that something new is hooked up either.
was I supposed to leave that wireless thing plugged in I am lost what do I do to make it work do I have to go into something and set it up were do I start
the reason I am using a wire is to make it faster I don't want to use that wireless thing anymore

we both have same computer they are not old both have 1.0 gb temp memory and 200 gb perminent memory they are hp computers

Have you connected your modem, router and computers as such:

modem -> router -> computers

Are you getting an IP address on your wife's computer?

You shouldn't need the wireless if you connected the cable directly to the computer.

Do you have Earthlink as an ISP?

They have a new policy which requires all customers to have an adapter.(I know stinks...I'm thinking of changing companies). A few years back you didn't have to.
