Default What's happening to the gaming industry?

I'm not a big gamer myself at all. In fact the last game I played was Def Jam on the PS2 (which I don't even own). The Last PC game I played was Wormux (just to test it out). And that's all I've played since the beginning of 2008.

It's as if something is missing which I long for... something the old titles used to have.. King's Quest, Flight of the Amazon Queen, Duke Nukem.. etc. etc.

There's really nothing unique about today's games to me. It was Doom back in the 1990's and development on Doom 4 started on the 7th of May 2008. Nothing has changed.. except the graphics, sounds, guns etc. Perhaps a nifty "feature" here and there but that's it. Games don't make me stick infront of my screen the whole day like they used to, they're not intriguing.. just not interesting.

I'm sure I'm not the only person feeling like this, am I? What are your thoughts on this.. please elaborate.

PS: Am not talking about Windows/.Xbox/Playstation/Nintendo/Linux etc. games but games and the gaming industry as a whole.

You are spot on about the gaming industry. Games are just not what they used to be. Back in the day, games were more personable, had more character. Nowadays, games are just kill kill kill, or action this, action that.

For me, playing Might and Magic, the Ultima Series, Bard's Tale Series, Baldur's Gate, and the list goes on. I think there is much room in the gaming market for people who loved the games of yesterday if a company would just step up and realize it.

It seems action FPS games are what the masses want. They make the games because they get the money.

I like to play the older PC games from the 80s and 90s, as I enjoyed those games growing up - they are still fun to play.

It will be interesting to see how games will change as more become Blu-ray and can hold a lot more information.

The future for gaming will be cloud gaming without a physical console

Internet must be jacked up internationally for this to be possible

What it do Ulrich...I may not be qualified to speak on this subject, being that I've never been a big gamer...but have you tried to Hitman series...they keep me going for hours(when I actually have hours to devote to my ps2)...true its a shoot em up game...if that's what you want to call it....

but I like them cuz the object is not to kill everything moving, but you must develop a real strategy and take your time to beat the levels. The object is to kill your target only, without alerting anyone else for a Silent Assassin rating...that's much harder than just shooting everyone in your path...

Another thing that I like is that each level has multiple ways for you to beat it...which no other game that "I" play has that option....

Default Gaming has indeed changed

Who remembers Wolfenstein? That was the very first pc game I played. I remember installing it from one 3 1/2 floppy- After that I was hooked: Heretic, Blood, Doom, etc. I bought a PS1 with Tekken and Wrestlemania series game. After that I bought a Nitendo 64 and I bought various basketball and wrestling games. Bought the Xbox when it first came out and I bought Halo and then other games I liked was The Matrix, basketball games, Bushido Blade, Dead or Alive, etc. but then I think over time I outgrew them.

They no longer kept my attention anymore. I still like to play the NBA games that EA Sports put out but for me, it's too the point that I'm actually turned off because although the games have improved in graphics, sound BUT it's almost too real. Shooting or hitting you see blood in the games, you can now carjack somone in a game, that just doesn't sit too well with me.

Smile Old School Video Games

I too was thrilled at first with N64. But after awhile I felt somethin' was missing. Gone were the days of 2D gameplay and nostalgic tunes! Then along comes Playstation with it's Rated-R shoot em all's. Then everybody followed suit.

It's true Nintendo tried to bring it back with D.S.(which I like). But I miss the good ol days

Luigi's Mansion rocks!

Yes,

Hitman was a bit more innovative, but lately there are a couple of games as such.

Take some of the older games for example however. They were purely good strategic games or at least "Quest" games. You didn't need to kill anyone, you simply got stuck with a certain mission and struggled for days to get past a certain part of the game. You had to think.

Nowadays the only games that don't involve killing are sport games and racing games. There just aint no more quest games apart from the little online games such as Puzzle Pirates (which I regard as a good little game btw).

I remember I used to remember some basic dos commands like cd cd\ cls and so forth just so I could run my games like Keen which I was very fond of back then as a toddler. Space Quest was amazing, I liked the idea that you could type in what your character should do and in any strange circumstance where he would refuse to do it the character would always make a funny remark.

More opinions guys?

Get an xbox 360 and Halo 3, and I'll come over to play you every day.
