Default Self Promotion and Links in Posts

Lisa Help!

I have many websites and many services that I would love to offer people of the forum from time to time. The only problem is I am afraid of getting my hand slapped or getting on the wrong side with all here.

Please clarify when it is O.K. and when it is not to self promote or link to ones own website withing a forum post.

Thanks a million...Hear from you soon.

I believe for the most part you need to keep your links in your sig. You can easily promote there.

In the Site Reviews section you can post a link to your site in the body of the post.

Than again Lisa may say otherwise.

First of all I appreciate you asking. And I also saw your other thread where you recommended someone to your site. I'd rather people not say "visit my site" but in your case, the person was asking a question relevant to your niche/topic. So I see what you mean.

BUT there are a lot of people here with sites related to Webmasters and web development so if I let everyone recommend their sites in related threads, things could get out of hand.

It's better for me to say "self promotion is not allowed period" rather than giving instances when it's acceptable. Then you start getting into a whole lot of gray areas and confusion.

I have to say, I don't mind it as much in your instance where the the thread was directly related to your site BUT I have to also be careful how other members perceive what someone does. I know it's tempting to self promote but if you just reply to a thread and provide useful advice people will eventually notice your sig and check it out.

Just understand I have to look out for the board as a whole. And if I start giving instances where it's OK to say "visit my site" then that can open up a great big can of worms. And I don't like worms.

No, no worms allowed.

I appreciate your response, and I will take heed and of course abide by your requests. Also a great post for others with similar questions...I hope.

Thanks again.

Yes it was a good question and it's always good to reiterate what it is appropriate and what's not in terms of self promotion.

Now I did just edit one of your posts when someone asked about a free host. The link to 000webhost was an affiliate link. You are not allowed to reply with a link to another company with your affiliate link. That is definite spam and listed in the forum rules so please watch that. Can you imagine if I allowed everyone to do that? So I edited your link. Thanks for understanding!
