Default Watch as I turn a $100 investment into Thousands - A Broke College Student's Journal

    Welcome to My Journal!

This is a journal for documenting my struggles and triumphs with my website. I have been trying for the last 4 years to make an income online, but have failed time and time again. This time, I'm going to do the right thing and make my dream come true so I can help my family get out of debt.

    My Story

For the last four years, I've been trying to make any amount of income. I was a desperate teenager who needed money - not for myself - but for my family. We were broke, heavily in debt, and there was barely any food in our house to feed three growing teenagers. My parents worked long hours and did the best they can, but as the thought of college expenses start creeping closer and closer to reality (I was the eldest child), I knew I need to do something to help with the finances.

Around my sophomore year (2010), I discovered the online money-making platform. I used the internet for academic research and for recreational activities, but I never knew a person could make so much money online. I heard about Whateverlife and that teenager making over a million dollars a year, and this started getting my gears working. Could I be the next Whateverlife? Could I make money online, too?

    The Research and early Success

So for the next year, I did extensive research about making money online. I made sure to keep this as a secret project from my parents (I was imagining their faces when they get that surprise check in the mail!). Once I thought I was ready, I started writing hundreds of articles on revenue-sharing websites (content farms were, at the time, the best new thing for income).

Initially I made $20 my first month for only writing about 10 articles, which was absolutely fantastic. I had done the math in my head and if I had written 100 articles, I could make enough money to buy at least two weeks of groceries for my family every month!

    Google Panda Update

Unfortunately, my optimism was short-lived. Before my second month, the dreaded Google panda update happened and almost all my traffic diminished. Gone. Poof. And so, cursing myself for being so young and not discovering the online platform sooner, I tried other things. Completing online offers, doing countless surveys, participating in PPC, and even participating in blackhat activities like Ponzi schemes.

Between juggling with High School work and doing these online activities, I was making only $50 or so a month, and I was spending up to 6 hours AFTER school working on these online activities. I was a miserable person and I was very frustrated, and I was wishing that I would find success sooner or later.

    Google Adsense

At around this time, I heard about Google Adsense, and I thought that this was it. This was the program that was going to get me rich! I joined a revenue sharing website that allowed Google Adsense, and I made my ads run on there.

Unfortunately, I didn't keep any eye on my account and I was banned on Google Adsense. Apparently, someone was fraudulently clicking on my ads and it was enough to get me kicked out of the program. And this SUCKED SO BAD FOR ME because I had JUST reached $100 on the account. I didn't really know how good of a program Google Adsense until it was gone - there was just simply no better version of Google Adsense.

    Fast-Forward To Now

4 years later, I am 19 years old, in college, and I'm making less than $100 a month from survey referrals. I decided in December of 2012 that I would invest in a website and use what I know to make my dream happen. I don't exactly know for sure what works online, but I do know what DOESN'T work, and in some ways that's even better.

Because I'm a person who stays on track by documenting things, I'm going to be keeping a running journal on WebsiteBabble.com. Ever since I discovered Lisa back in mid-2012, she has been such an inspiration to me, so what better place to document my success than at WB? I've also done a similar journal for my weight loss and I received amazing results, so why not for making money online?

I know this has been a long post and I do apologize, but this is something that I need to do for myself in order to make things happen. Thank you for reading and good luck to your own websites!

My Youtube videos are getting some views, but I've only gotten one subscriber, and I honestly think they're only doing it so I can subscribe back to them. As for my website, it's coming together nicely, but I still have a long way to go. I wish I could just fast-forward into the future so I can go through the many hours of tapping away at my computer. It's not necessarily boring, but my back is starting to hurt and I don't think sitting down for 5-6 hours at a time helps much.

Surprisingly, my other online income streams are working nicely for me. I'm expecting to make $60 this month, and I already had earnings updates for next month and it'll be over $100 for only one website. It's nice to know that, even though I'm not getting any income from my current work, that the websites I've been working on before aren't completely worthless to me now.

    Hey Jay,

Most people struggle and continue to struggle for a while. Hopefully you will be one of the ones that figures it out.

    good luck!

Thank you everyone. I never viewed my earnings right now as achievements - maybe I'm just expecting too much of myself?

At the moment, I'm really enjoying making Youtube videos. It's strange. I was always scared to do them because I thought people wouldn't like me, but after doing 3 videos I'm starting to really not care too much about it. My traffic still stinks and that's expected, but... I don't know. Is it bad if I focus on Youtube more? I'm still going to be doing my website because I still enjoy the content part of it, but somedays I just do not want to write.

That's what happens Jay. You've conquered a fear and now you realize you can do it and you are enjoying it. If you enjoy doing videos, do more of them. There is not roadmap that you *have* to follow. You can use YouTube to build up your following if that is what you truly enjoy doing. As a result, you may discover more ways to build up your site traffic.

The key word in your post is "enjoy". And if you are doing something you like, the chances of you succeeding will be higher.

    Hey Jay!

    You are inspiring.. and tenacious.

Just wanted to chime in here and mention.. you are seoing your videos right?

JamesWedmore.com is an awesome authority on video marketing. He has a $100. course (which is well worth it) but I'm sure if you look around his site, you'll find free video seo advice.

It made a huge difference in how many times my videos were seen when I started seoing them

Have you asked anyone else to look at your videos? As Lisa says, success it success. I had a very good start to my online work followed by a slow 9 months. Now I'm running 2 websites and making good money offline, but still not fantastic online. It just takes a lot of hard work to get there!

You may consider yourself to have failed, but relative to me you're quite successful. I haven't had a single affiliate commission and I'm making about one dollar a month from AdSense. So remember there are people less fortunate than you.

Good luck and I will continue to read your updates. I'm starting to document my own experience too like you're doing, because I think it will be good for maintaining motivation and keeping track of my small successes so that I don't forget about them.

The article-publishing website I started writing for in December 2012 paid me $40 for the month of December, and I'm getting paid about $130 for the month of January. I won't get the money though until February since they pay on a 30-day delay. My referral websites are also doing relatively well - I get about $2 every few days from my main one (I have over 500 referrals so far!), and my other smaller article publishing websites are racking in some money.

But, as for Youtube and my main website, traffic is still nonexistant and i'm still working on the content. I've been lagging a bit behind my schedule due to college taking up most of my time. This week alone I've had 3 or 4 tests, back to back, and my brain is fried. It's nice knowing that I can just speak my mind on Youtube and still work towards my ultimate goal and not have to type all the time.

The end of January is closing in and I'm assuming my online earnings will be around $80 if I total everything right. It's not too good but it's not too bad, either, so I won't complain.

I found myself having a really bad case of web-browsing this whole weekend. I couldn't seem to get situated and get things done. Facebook was open, and when I was done with Facebook, I went to Youtube, and then when I was done with Youtube, I went to Twitter, and then I refreshed Facebook and started the whole process over.

So today, I bought myself a kitchen counter and I set it for 60 minutes. I'm planning to spend the full 60 minutes doing nothing but work on my website and other income streams, and then when the time is up I can take a break for 30 minutes or so. Then I'll do another 60 minutes, and then I'll be done for today and I can work on other important things like studying for exams and whatnot.

Oh, and some good news - my article publishing websites are getting a ton of traffic lately. The articles I wrote a month ago about certain health-related issues like psoriasis and diabetes, are exploding with traffic. I'm currently on my way to getting a $300 paypal payment for January, and the traffic is only getting better and better .

I'm going to try to save up for SBI! soon, but I don't know. We'll see.

Why do we have so much bones in our body. Why do we have to label every single bump and every single indentation. -_- Studying for my biology practical is draining the life out of me.

Fortunately, I've still been able to release Youtube videos. And right now I am VERY comfortable with doing videos. I am able to go through a whole recording session without stopping, screwing up, or pausing. I'm also getting a few true subscribers - those random people who subscribe to your channel but have no videos for themselves, so they're obviously subscribing to you for genuine reasons.

I also reached the $300 mark on my writing websites, so yay. I'm expecting a big check next month.

I'm hitting the hay. See you all tomorrow.

    Happy February everyone!

My Youtube channel is coming along. I've been uploading every day and so far I have 12 subscribers. It isn't the best, BUT, I'm happy that my videos are getting seen by someone. I've also been steadily working on my website. Still not done, and I have a lot of homework from college so I might have to put the website on the back-burner for now until things clear up again.

I'm also focusing a lot of my weight loss. I think me getting healthier and losing weight is somewhat of a double-bonus; I will be an overall healthier, confident person, and my results will be posted on Youtube so I'll be building that credibility. The only thing that is against me is time...
