Default free ebooks

I have spent quite a while looking at free sites and how they generate traffic. One popular method seems to be offering to give the surfer something free if they join the sites email list. I have around 200 ebooks that are relevant to my sites topic and are free to distribute. I was thinking about putting an advert on my site offering these ebooks for free if they sign up to my news letter. So far in about 150 unqiues that I have had this week, 3 have joined my news letter. 1:50 so far. Perhaps if I do this, I would improve that ratio. I just don't want to annoy my surfers in the process as I seem to be slowly building a little creditability.. Any thoughts?

It's great way to get people on your list since you already have traffic.

You need to make sure the offer is of high value. A lot of free ebooks look like a collection of articles...a lot of fluff and no meat. If the offer provides valuable information, is gives YOU credibility. They like you. You make friends. They come back. If the book is really good maybe they'll tell somebody about it...nothing beats "word of mouth".

The promotion doesn't have to be big. A small opt-in in the upper right with telling them it's a free gift and what it is. Every so often promote it in a post where it fits naturally. Don't create posts just to promote. All of the "guru" site I've seen do it but they have their loyal following, and they use the "pre-sell" technique.

If you have that many ebooks give a few away to your list AND promote stuff you want to sell to them...I wouldn't do it ant the same time but i really haven't had much experience with that part of it.

What you sell should be better than what you give away.

If you want to viralize the book see if it is re-brandable. All that means is you replace the affiliate links with your own and point them to you blog, site, your product, and your opt-in list.

Check the rights and see if they can give away the rebranded version...write you own free report and you've got complete control over the content and what you want to promote.

If you write your own, don't make my mistake...get an editor.

I've got an ebook on how build your list by giving away mini ebooks. A lot of the "bigger" internet marketers in that niche are building mini-sites with a really good free offer up front then a one time offer on the back for a low price. They sweeten the deal by giving you an affiliate link, promotional tools, ad copy, "profit pulling emails" to send out etc

The technique is real. In the sorry shape my site was in I still got opt-ins off of a "fly in" on my sales letter...the site was only up for 2 weeks.

Personally, I'm going to give away an ebook, put a bullet in the 5-day ecourse (it was crap anyway), and take MY report that I used to offer and turn it into content for the blog.

Thanks for the reply.. I will go through them all manually and select only the best ones. There may be a lot less ebooks, but they will all be high quality.

My site is just a freesite, I am not really bothered at this stage about selling and making some money, My traffic is too low to worry about that for now. My site went live on the 3rd sept and around 350 uniques so far. Mostly from forum signatures and I have a couple of links on other related sites and 15 hits from google so far. I'm focusing on building content so I am at least one of the best sites in my niche, preferably the best..then I will try submitting to the directories and try and get some quality link exchanges. I am hoping that if my site has a lot of good content it will be easier to get on the directories and get some good link exchanges, even though my traffic is currently low.

I am noticing around 30% of my traffic now is returning visitors. It is probably higher than that because it doesn't include ppl returning with different IPs. I'm hoping to improve that when I've written more useful, relevant content.

I definitely agree with Mike on the quality. I joined softwaresellers.net because they allow you to resell their ebooks and I was thoroughly disappointed with the quality they offered. Most of them contain info you can find anywhere and it just wasn't worth the risk of ticking people off because the freebies were cheaply done.

I've decided from now on I will create my own e-books like Allan Gardyne did for his newsletter subscription. Now THAT free book was worth an email address. You can tell he put a lot of time into it.
