My core skills are web development. I've be working with PHP and MySQL for 4 years now. I come from computer sci. background.

I often heard from people clients being really pain in the ass. I've experienced that first hand myself. Sometimes you get into a never ending contract, a client who doesn't really know what he wants.

What i need to do is explore a niche market where i can develop and offer a software solution that improves their business. I thought of looking into making management software for trucking companies a while ago but never actually went into really.

The labourer is worthy of his wages

It should not be a problem for you to get people to pay for your scripts. if it is priced reasonably of course.

What type of scripts do you sell?

Is there a reason why you want to be a service provider? The trucking idea seemed to be a good one. Any particular reason why you didn't chase it?

Rather than selling a copy of the software for a one time fee, it is profitable to licensee or lease the software on subscription on monthly basis. This is the new model software companies are using now.

I don't have any enough knowledge in this industry. However, where i live, a industrial town, there are many small to big transport companies.

I have a friend whom i helped setup a website for his cousin's trucking company. He told me they bought a license for a trucking management software from a guy and they pay him $100/month. I'm assuming this guy is doing busness with other local trucking companies as well.

I don't have a software solution at this moment to offer and after learning there is already an individual who has a software and clients, so I backed off and didn't go into it. (and don't know how many more individuals or companies here locally are doing this. There may be a stiff competition but i don't know)

Thou, i know some people indirectly in the trucking business (because there is so many of 'em out here), i may be able to get more input on this and see if this is something pursing.

You are certainly looking in the right direction and the trucking niche seems to be an interesting one.

Even though you don't have much knowledge on the industry you don't have great contacts within the business. In the sales world you have the greatest advantage with less leg work to do.

Learn about the industry from your contacts. Find out what systems they have, why they have them and what problems does a typical worker have. Come up with ideas on how you could stream line their business and make their jobs easier and more profitable. Ever hear of Sandler Selling System? One of the points of this selling system is finding your customers pain and to provide a solution to ease that pain.

Earlier you said about dealing with customer that don't know what they want. This again is an advantage is it allows you to tailor a solution for them and being able to present different ideas to them will gain you more trust.

This niche also gives you the opportunity to provide more than just software to the trucking companies. You can also provide hosting, web design, basic SEO, data back-ups and so on. Take a look at a competitor and you'll be sure they too provide these services.
