Default New here and New to being a Webmaster Any advice?

Hey guys thanks in advance for taking the time out to read my message! I have just purchased a new domain and I am planning on focusing on dinner recipes. My inspiration came from finding Lisa's videos on youtube when I searched for adsense information. I have bothered Lisa as much as I think I should and then I realized she had this forum so here I am!

Now I know that for optimization I need to focus on a single topic so I did not know that before I bought this website that I bought and it is called cookyourdinner.com, and Lisa suggested to focus on one type of recipe like italian or deserts but when I search the word recipe in google all the sites have multiple types of recipes! So that scares me thinking I made a bad choice on my site type

I want to make videos of me cooking some of the recipes and stuff like that, and have info on my cooking advice and my favorite cooking tools etc but it sounds like that may be a bad idea if my goal is to have google find me and have good linked adsense things.

Can anyone give me advice on this topic at all and what you think would be a good alternative? Should I just sell this site and make something else? I dunno! Hewp!

Thanks again for any help!

Hi Kristen,

First of all, don't let what you type into Google scare you. Any site that appears #1 for a generic term like "recipes" probably has an EXTREME amount of inbound links and it would be difficult to compete with these sites in the search engines.

The reason I suggested a smaller niche like chocolate desserts, etc. is because you will have less competition to deal with. Once your site begins to draw in more traffic then by all means feel free to add more kinds of recipes but in the beginning it's much better to start with a small niche.

Just because you see a lot of sites ranked at the top with a certain kind of content, doesn't mean you can't succeed with your smaller niche. That would be suggesting that only one type of recipe site can succeed and I am sure that's not true.

Your goal is to define a certain audience and provide the best possible content for that audience (dessert lovers, chocolate lovers, or whatever that audience may be). You will drive yourself silly trying to figure out other people's sites and rankings. Focus on what you love, define your niche and build useful content like crazy.

Kristeng,

I know I may not be addressing your question/concern directly, but when I am in a similar situation, it usually helps to think of the target audience... i.e. who and why would someone visit my site? If I can identify a specific group, I go for it.

There are many different sub-areas within the recipe/cooking market... cooking recipes for busy individuals, specific cuisines and types of foods.

Needless to say, you need to be passionate about the topic... not just pursue it because there is a demand for it. While you may succeed without passion, you will enjoy the process a whole lot if you are interested in the topics of the website.

Do you know if your web host allows you to have more than 1 domain? You can always just keep cookyourdinner.com, because maybe you will come up with a great idea for it in the future.

In addition, I think the domain cookyourdinner.com can be applied to may subareas in the recipe/cooking market, so I would keep it for now

Sorry I have rambled, but these are my general thoughts Let me know if you would like me to clarify

Sherif

Your idea has got alot of potential. Remember as the saying goes "Rome was not build in one day". So you have to start somewhere.
  1. Brainstorming
  2. Choose Niche (Like Lisa said - choose smaller niche)
  3. Choosing Domain name
  4. Get website hosting
  5. Design Layout of website
  6. Write content and create video clips
  7. Do on page and off page SEO
  8. market site

This list looks daunting at first especially if you a newbie, but it is not.

That's why you are at the right place WebsiteBabble to get help.

Lisa Thank you so much AGAIN! I was freaked out by what I pulled up when running the recipe search but I can definately see where making a smaller niche would benefit me, I love COOKING all kinds of food so I was hoping to do it all but I will just have to figure out what I like to cook the most and go with that for now

Thank you for this advice as well, I am more of the do it now person who gets frustrated when I cannot have things booming at the beggining, as you can see I have bought my domain and bought hosting but I am studying how to make my website easiest to read and navigate before I create my layout and continue on with the rest of the steps you suggested! I love this site!

Default Cook Your Dinner!

Hey, for what it's worth I would suggest that the domain name you have and what said you want to achieve could easily be looked at as a "niche." And maybe a pretty good one, too.

I know lots of folks who rarely eat at home, largely because they either don't know how to cook or don't think they have time. Look at the success of Rachel Ray's "30 minute meals."

There are several ways to narrow the focus without having to narrow the content or name too much, just the emphasis or tone. And by focusing on something like helping people develop confidence in cooking or something like that you help people feel better about the subject, and themselves, so they would enjoy coming back time after time for the emotional life.
