Default A website of websites...

I was wondering how difficult it is to put together a Squidoo type website where you make it easy for people to create their own webpage. My idea is to have a site where teachers can come and create websites for their classes. It would obviously not have to be as advanced as Squidoo, but it would have some of the essential things that a teacher might need.

If you're going to do something like that, you'll need a lot more technical knowledge than the average website builder =/

Yes, that would take a lot of work and I don't necessarily think it's a one-man project either.

Teachers these days use CMS to create and dynamically modify pages with great ease and it takes only a few minutes to set up as well. The only issue with CMSes are to change the templates to something unique. That's something the average teacher can't do and if you can somehow simlify that then you're off to success - as long as your product is also free that is.

So true.

To make this kind of website yourself your going to need someone that is strong in that field such as PHP and databases as you going to be storing mass amounts of data.

But its definitely a good idea to work from. Look into different types of web hosting as you are going to need a big amount of storage for a start.

Then the next step is to find a website freelancer who can make this kind of website for you for a reasonable enough price.

Or try and find an already available service that might be able to specialize in giving you lots of pages available for you to use.

You can either buy a ready made website creation script that will allow you to do what you want to do (teachers can come and create websites for their classes). Just do a search in Google for it.

Alternatively you can also get a technical guy eg. PHP and Mysql / ASP and SQL and he or she can design the database driven website from scratch for you.

Hope this helps

Default you could definitely do if you do some studying...

I think your whole concept is excellent, and I'm sort of doing the same thing myself, only with dentists, not teachers. Two weeks ago I knew NOTHING about php, css, MySql, or really even html for that matter. I decided to give it a bit of time and effort, and I can definitely see it paying off. I registered with a dedicated server which came with countless extras (database wizards, site designers, mass e-mail accounts, etc...) Like I said, it took a few frustrating weeks playing with everything, but I can get a decent site out in an hour or two now, true story. Of course it was overwhelming at first, but you get acclimated quickly. Check out WebHostingPad.com... that's the one I registered with. As far as I've heard though, basically any Linux based cPanel host gives you nearly identical back-end features. I honestly went from knowing NOTHING, to feeling like a techie in a few weeks. It just takes a little practice and actually getting your hands dirty. I guess my thesis is something like this: "You have a good idea, don't let your lack of knowledge scare you away!"
