Exclamation Off to a great start...now I'm stuck

Hi everyone,

I recently started building a website related to employment. The main idea about the website is to teach people the difference between a job and a career, and to put people on the right track toward getting a career they will love.

Initially, I was on a roll. The first few pages I put together has a lot of info about writing resumes and cover letters, the proper ways to look for jobs, networking yourself, etc. Then I thought I would add different pages for different careers. For example, a page dedicated to careers in accounting.

Here's the problem, I am a HR professional with lots of knowledge about various HR issues, but i don't know too much about specific info related to some popular careers. For instance, one of my pages is dedicated to careers in construction, but I don't know anything about construction! Should I just eliminate the pages that are dedicated to the careers I know nothing about, or should I do some extensive research to find the info I need?

Right now, I have about 20 pages dedicated to specific careers, but I only have a lot of useful information for about 1/2 of them.

any input is greatly appreciated, thanks so much.

Hi West

Welcome!

I don't see anything wrong with getting some books or doing research on the careers that you aren't as familiar with. That same thing happened to me with my fitness site. Once I started getting traffic I began getting emails from people about issues I didn't know. So I bought some books and began to write article on what my audience wanted to learn more about.

Nothing wrong with expanding. You may end up drawing traffic from people typing in keywords related to those other fields.

Focus on what you do know -- research the rest after you get that done. The faster you get quality info the better.

I agree with Shaun. Refine every article you have thus far on your site. Put together other topics you know of well. Don't worry about the stuff you're not familiar with yet. As you keep develop and refining your site everything will fall together in place.

You will have to do research of the topics that you don't know.

Do research on the internet or buy specialized books on the various fields that you don't know.

It is only normal for someone to not know something about every single career there is. I think that if you say that you don't know much about construction on the page and you give links to other web sites that do, then you will do very well. If you can't find sites that relate to that career, then you will have to do research but I don't recommend extensive research, just give the basic facts and say you don't know much about it.

Default Other careers

Hi,
I was thinking maybe you could put the request out thru different
social websites for people in the trade to offer advice, or try googleing that particular trade.

Default You can be an expert!

I was a broadcast journalist for more than 15 years and quickly became an expert on every story by - this is so simple - by getting on the telephone and calling the experts and asking questions in advance of the story being done.

First, go to Radio Shack and invest in a telephone taping device.

Call your local Construction Union Hall and ask to speak with the Business Agent or President. Tell them you are writing about construction careers for your website and they won't stop talking, believe me.

Ask the person you are about to interview if they mind if you tape the conversation. Almost everyone says - "Yes".

This works for any and all topics. You can become a niche expert in a matter of minutes because the person you interview will not give you a lot of useless information. They will give you the best and the worst points to write about.

Hope this helps.
Jim
