Question Membership / subscription sites

Hi

Im looking into creating a membership/subscription site in the future,
My question is: what is the easiest way to do this, it doesn't need to support payments as it will be free.
All I need to do is have a "register option" and "log in" that will create individual users log in name and p/word.
My domain is with GoDaddy at the moment and I want to learn how to incorporate this feature into a site, being a beginner I just need some advice on where to start what scripts or software I would need so I can begin to learning now. Im not to bothered about where I host my site as I have not purchased a host account yet.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Thanks
Dan

Well theres various ways of going about this I know of 3 so far.

- Content Management System (mass user control + low manual work)

- Blogging (has the capability of a login and comment structure)

- Building manually and intergrating into current site through PHP or other scripts. (requires a lot of php no how)

I would reccomend CMS its an all in one package, it requires other users to login to your site post in your forum, comment on your pagers and everything you could possibly imagine alongside being able to add new features to your site with CMS plugins.

The top companys that do CMS are PHPnuke.com & E107.org along with a few more that others might enlighted you on such as joomla or nuke evo.

Which ever method or option you choose they all will provide a password and login to your site, does your host your are thinking about apply PHP 4 or above and MySQL support? as this a required feature to install a blog, forum, cms and much more.

If you havent thought of a host definately check out Godaddy.com and choose there cheapest economy hosting it will provide all the features you need to use these type of software on your new site.

I would add Drupal or perhaps Joomla to the recommendation list

Both are CMS and capable to extend to a community site if there is a need in future.
