Default Refer a friend buttons

Hi

I read on a site that refer a friend buttons are a great asset to gaining traffic.
But when i see them on sites I cant be bothered to fill them out (thats just me though). Has anyone got one and how much does it gain traffic?
Or is it just a waste of valuable space?

Let me know!

Thanks

Dan

I had one a couple of years ago, and was actually surprised how much it was used. I probably got at least 5-10 referrers per day and that's more than I thought I'd get.

The main problem though was I didn't have it protected with a CAPTCHA image (that's the random image people are required to fill in before they submit a form. It keeps spammers from using your forms for malicious activities.) So I began to get a ton of spam and it just got to the point where it wasn't worth it. I thought of adding a new secure one but never got around to it.

If you decide to use one, make sure you find a secure script that makes it hard for spammers to hack into and send spam.

I never thought of the spam aspect of it, I had a copy of an unprotected code but I lost it, seems it was my best loss yet

Five to ten referrers a day is a lot of traffic for my 3 day old website, lol.

Thanks Lisa

Hi

Some would say everything happens for a reason!

I guess the spam issue would include submiting any type of form to my site as well wouldnt it. Because im looking for a form for people to sign up to my mailing list.

Yep, however with a mailing list, if you use a reputable company like AWeber then you won't have this issue. I've been using them for years and any kind of malicious activity is handled and dealt with by them.

But yes, in general, you have to be very careful with any type of form on your site. All my contact forms have CAPTCHA images installed and they cut down on form/comment spam greatly.

Even my Wordpress blog has a plug-in to capture comment spam and it's doing a very good job.
