Default Will I get traffic if I don't sell anything?

The site I want to set up is on how to paint portraits. I've been a portrait painter for a few years, but never got around to creating my own website (ironic, I know...).

I'm not sure that I want to solicit portraits on my site, since they're incredibly time consuming and difficult to do (I do love doing it, though)...

Anyway, I'd like to set up this how-to site as just that, since selling my portraits is another world altogether.

Bottom line - will I be able to make money as an affiliate, or do I need a product?

Thanks...

Lynn

Nope you do not need a product.

You can have a site that has nothing but articles and still make revenue from adverts. You can use a service like Google Adsense that will display ads on your site and every time someone clicks on an ad you get paid.

To be honest my very first site was a how to guide and I used Adsense. Still to this day its a great little earner and its so easy to use.

Thanks for the reply! I really appreciate everyone's generosity with their time - maybe someday I'll know what the *** I'm doing and will be able to return the favor.

Lynn,

Just stick around and you will get there. I know things can be reaally confusing and frustrating, even to techy people like me...lol but you just gotta stick around make the effort into finding the right information and putting in effort and time into bringing your idea/website to life. The more you dive into this, the more you learn.

It may seem hard to make any money at the beginning as you won't get many visitors. Don't give up--just keep plugging away. As it has been said, you will go through a (seems like) very large learning curve.

Just read the other posts on this forum as many provide a great insight into what works and what doesn't. This will help you to avoid many of the pitfalls that people have run into when generating income from their Web site.

Affiliate programs are all I use and the nice thing is there are programs in almost every niche. That's all I do is promote affiliate products. I've never sold my own products.

Thanks everyone - I guess in the back of my mind I'm thinking that very few people want to learn to paint portraits, but I could be wrong!

The world is probably a lot bigger than we realize, plus it's not just people in the U.S. who would access the site.

AttackDepression is a great site! LOVE The Secret, have been practicing it for 2 years (from other teachers who I found online)...anyway, solid and well written content, too. Good job!

Lynn, the great thing about the Net is that there is an audience for practically any subject and remember you can branch out to other painting topics once your site gets going. You just have to know how to tap into your target audience's needs and do it in a unique but helpful way.

And you're right, people in the U.S. aren't the only ones surfing. When I look at the breakdown of countries from my traffic stats, the spread among different countries increases more and more every year.
