Trouble sticking to one idea
I'm having a lot of trouble sticking to one idea at the moment.
I have this domain name which I love and consider brandable but because I like the name so much I have a feeling a certain niche would limit it.
It used to be a design resource site for over a year but I moved that content to yet another domain because I had bigger plans for that first site. The plans are usually so big that I don't have the resources to realize it.
When I do get an idea I can easily work out, I keep asking myself whether I really want the name to be known for that specific subject so I either end up taking the website offline or turning it into something temporary.
Has anyone else has this problem? If so, how did you overcome it?
I have a feeling my post isn't making a lot of sense but I have trouble putting everything into words. I'd give anything to be able to find the perfect niche and be comfortable using the domain for it.

Hi Nora,
I also always have too many ideas than I have time. Usually I just force myself to focus!
Now, regarding your question about the domain name you really like. This is a really tough question to answer.
While I understand you want to hold off on using that domain until you get the perfect idea/use for it... it is important not to be paralyzed by your quest for that perfect business idea. After all, you can start with a great idea that flops, and you can start with a hobby website that eventually excels beyond your wildest dreams.
Sorry, I know I am not helping... but since there are no pressing issues, here, if I were you, I would just sit on that domain for a while, keep my eyes open, all the while thinking about what I would like to accomplish on the internet, which my eventually help me figure out what to do with that domain.

Hi Nora. Would you care sharing the domain name with us? Maybe two heads or more would help with your dilemma? Sometimes we are too close to something and it's hard to just let go. Good luck and all the best.

I tend to have the same issue. Come with an idea then go get a domain. Problem ends up being that I have a lot of extra domains with no time to develop them. At other times I seem to go after some of the most competitive niches out there. Life is definitely a journey.

Focus on what?
Nora,
If you read around the site I know you will see over and over the phrase, "discover your passion." This is critical because to be successful, unless you have a different experience than almost every other successful person, you will have to work at a project for several years.
Perhaps you should stop thinking about what the best use of the name is and think about what you really want to spend the next few years doing. Then the way to apply the name may come much easier.

Thanks for the replies.
The domain is a made up word so it doesn't target any specific niche.
I do have a passion but the problem is that I keep moving whatever I do to different domain names which leaves the one name with potential as an unused site. I think the site will always be design related but the problem is that part of me also wants to use that name for a character design brand instead of just offering design resources. I don't have the resources to turn it into a brand at the moment and if I do stick to the design resource niche, I don't see how it will ever be able to grow into something else since it will be the only thing it will ever be known for.
Sorry if my posts seem a little (or very) confusing.

Not so confusing. I've been there.
If you think you may want to develop a brand at some point and use that name just decide to save it for that potential use and never think about using it for anything else. Never close any doors you don't have to close. If you have a niche you want to work on seriously, get a good name for it and get going.
So what if you can't use the name now. So what if it is ten years from now when you get around to it. I have several good domain names in reserve for working on later and I don't have a clue as to whether I will live long enough to get around to them. But I know what I would like to do with them if and when I can. If I never get to them, nothing lost. But if I ever can, I won't be disappointed for hanging onto the names.
Making decisions and getting on with things is not an easy skill. I have struggled with it plenty myself. But it is well worth cultivating.

Thanks, you're right.
I guess I'll be saving the domain until its the right moment to develop it comes along.

Nora, I think most of us here have had that problem at one time or another. I do it all the time! Get 3 or 4 things started and then stress out over which one to work on and when!

Response.
Good Morning,
I offer our strategy as a possible plan of action to determine the use of your domain names and whether to discard them (as requested in your first post).
We own many domain names and are always registering more... we are an idea company so you can imagine how many. When one purchases a domain name with the intention of use in conjunction with a developing idea it is best to keep a non-emotional attachment to the URL. Passion for your product or service (as mentioned above) has been proven to increase your chances of success however the details of your path should not be over emphasized or again, filled with emotional attachment.
Having said this, the strategy we use is to register the domain if it strikes us within the moment. Then if that particular idea and/or domain that goes along with it is not pursued we clear out all unused domains after a one year registration period. Here we recommend selling those domains to recoup investment or simply letting them expire if they have no monetary value.
This process does two things for your operations. Number one it focuses you or your organization on what's important and allows a group or person to "move on" from those old ideas that usually never happen anyway (if they didn't happen within the first year you created them). Remember there will always be more great ideas. Also it's important to remember that psychologically something happens when you no longer own the domain - again you move on mentally. Secondly, you are creating more "space" as they say for new ideas to move into your life, organization, etc.
It seems like such a small thing to have many domains and ideas always floating around that you never get to... and one could even say they don't bother me, we don't really think about them, etc. This maybe be true depending on the individual but keep in mind you must stay fluid with your domains and ideas that go along with them.
Of course this may not apply to everyone's situation. It works for us and so it's being suggested for your post Nora. I hope it helps.
Warm Regards,
Brains
