Default Making a new site?

Hi guys,

How do I start...

currently, I'm thinking of making another site, one which will target a broader subject instead of talking about video games.

Here's some ideas I've brainstormed:

- How to play piano, free lessons for beginners
- How to play guitar, free lessons for beginners
- Arm exercises
- Senior High Handbook (I'm going into grade 10 next year, and I had this crazy idea of accumulating all of my notes and what i've learned from school everyday onto the site)
- How to reduce global warming

Comments?

Thanks,
Jim

Hi Jim

What specifically do you want feedback on regarding these topics? All of these topics have potential as I'm sure there is an audience for every single one. So I throw it back to you. What topic interests you the most and also you need to think about the future. Which topics do you think you can provide info for years and years to come? In other words do you know enough about arm exercises to keep adding valuable content and attract an audience? And who would your audience be? Males looking to build muscles? Females looking to lose fat? These are the kinds of questions you have to ask yourself as you choose a topic.

Yeah, currently, I'm sort of interested in arm building for men...

I'm wondering, how did you do your stomach exercise site? Did you have any experience on abs beforehand?

Do you think I should target a specific audience? Like teens for instance?

Thanks,
Jim

The more specific the audience the better. My "about me" page on my FSE pretty much tells you why I started it. I have personal experience with the topic. It frustrated me so I made a site to explain the issues I had. Nothing better than writing a site about something you experienced.

The only reason I created the site was to test Site Build It! so I chose that topic because it happened to be something I was experiencing at the time.

well, i don't really have lots of experience right now, but I am working out for 20 min a day with dumbells.

I'm thinking of creating an arm building site for teens, cause I've always tried to find info about it, but never could.

I also know that teens these days are really wanting to build up to impress the ladies.

What do you think? Does this idea have some potential?

Thanks,
Jim

PS: Do you think I should do total body training, or just arm building?

Sounds like you know this is an issue with teens so why not go with that. Almost any topic has potential if you market effectively and know how to get in front of your audience.

BTW, some of us adults are impressed by muscular arms too. But in all seriousness this certainly can work. Start doing some keyword research with the Google adwords tool to see if there are any kind of specific arm-building related keywords that are searched for.

You mentioned you don't have a lot of experience now. That's fine but as I asked earlier, make sure you are into this topic enough to keep building. What if you get tired of lifting weights and get bored with it after a few weeks? Would you still be motivated to build a thorough site on this topic? It would be great to include a section on your site about your own personal experience. It would be sort of like those weight loss blogs where people show their own progress as they work toward a goal. The more detailed (pictures) and proof you can show that you know what you're talking about, the better.

Think different. Don't just build a site with vague information about building up your arms. What are the other sites missing? I would say the personal touch. So the more personal you can make this the better.

I'm playing devil's advocate here for sure because I just want to make sure you are enthusiastic enough about it.

I think it may be a little limited long term. Only because the arm muscles are the easiest to train. But if you include the upper body you may have more to work with.

Be careful with the online school notes. The school may have a problem with it. I don't know if they can do anything about it. I just remember hearing stuff about kids selling notes in school and getting in trouble. They may look at it like that.

Lisa is right. All of them are good ideas. Me personally, I like the piano lessons idea. But you have to do the work.

@lisa: So should I go ahead with this project? I really want to make this work...

PS: since I'm not very experienced with webdesign, can I ask where can I buy a template similar to your flat-stomach-exercises one?

@alpha7: I sort of agree...should I focus on the upper body? or arms? any opinions?

Thanks for your replies!

Jim, I can do even better. You can download the template I used (it's a basic version but same layout)

http://www.2createawebsite.com/video...nTemplate.html There's even a video.

Wow! Lisa, you're a lifesaver!

All these months I had to change my navbars manually...and there's finally a solution

I still have a few questions...

1. How do I make it so that the nav buttons can roll over like your flat stomach exercises one?
2. How do I change the background of the css? (the white parts to the left and right of the site)
3. What image editting software do you use?
4. Where do you find the royalty free images?
5. Do you think I should focus on the upper body building, or arm building for my new site?

Thanks for all your support!

jim

1. You need to add a new attribute to the style sheet. Something like
HTML Code:
#leftnav a:hover
{
    color: #000000;
    background-color: #CC0000;
}
1. Paste that code into the style sheet and this will add a hover effect to the left nav. I'd really recommend you go to w3schools.com and learn the basics of CSS because it will teach you how to build on what I've already done and do more custom things with the style sheet.

I purposely did not make the template just like my SBI! site because I didn't want to just give out my exact site design to everyone. So I purposely made it very basic so people can pick up the basics of CSS and learn on their own. That's how I learned CSS. I would find sites with basic templates and go to sites like w3schools.com and learn more attributes.

2. Add
HTML Code:
{ background-color: #000000; }
to the style sheet. This will also change the background color of the main content area because I didn't specify one. So you'll need to add a color attribute to the #content section of the style sheet so it won't be the same as the background.

I'm going to see if you can figure it out by playing around with the style sheet OK? Really study that CSS file and notice how each section is given attributes then those sections are called up on the index.html file

3. Dreamweaver

4. I subscribe to Photos.com but I know http://www.sxc.hu/ has some free stock photos'

5. I'm going to let you decide that. I can't answer that for you because I don't know what you know about the topic. Both are good but you have to decide what you're most comfortable with.

Good luck! Spend some time studying that style sheet and the index.html file to see how I was able to make certain things happen. That's the best way to learn how CSS works (in addition to visiting w3schools.com) CSS is so powerful and it's amazing what you can do when you learn how it works. Don't forget to watch my video too.

I know it may seem overwhelming at first but remember, I had no experience with CSS and I was self taught. So if I can do it so can you!

Hi lisa,

Thanks! You've answered all of my questions!

But I have one more...

how do you manage the navbar buttons and links through css? I don't see anything that controls these things in the CSS stylesheet.

Thank you!
Jim

The actual text for the links is controlled in the index.html file. The style of the links (hover color, appearance, font size, font style, etc.) are all controlled in the leftnav sections of the style sheet.

Ok, so I'll have to use SSI to do that right?

And how do you have a dotted line that separates your navbar and sidebar from your content?

Really sorry about all the questions...i'll repay you someday...somehow...
