Do you have a site topic yet? Its usually best to start with something you have knowledge or have a passion about such as a hobby. It makes it easier to compile content etc.

yes
Yes, I do have a topic. I wanted it to be a reference page to all of the good sites out there. I'm going to categorize them for people to find. I'm also going to make other sites, but I only have a really foggy idea of what I am going to do for them. I'm only focusing on the home page right now though. Does the topic I have change the help I need? Thanks.

Not at all. Just making sure you have an idea on what you want to focus on.
Do you have a name thought up yet? You may want to bang out some ideas on paper and see if you can find a domain name available. Or are you done this yet?

I don't know
I really don't have a name.
I thought of Penguin Pictures, but there already is a www.penguinpictures.com
I better 'bang up' some ideas on paper. Do you have any ideas?

Not off the top of my head. I can usually spend days thinking names up.

Do some brainstorming and start writing ideas down.

Hi,
How would you define a "good site"?
That could be a starting point.
I googled www.goodsites.com and came up with a spanish site, since I don't speak or write spanish so I'm not sure what it was about.
What category of content are you considering?
entertainment
pets
relationships
help people solve problems
Name the category(s) first, heck, you could create several each based on different interests and tell your audience why you think these are "good sites" to visit.
Also, what's in it for you (will you earn money with it?
and for them to visit your 'good sites' url.
Hope this helps.

Hi Archulas,
First of all, welcome to Website Babble.
I think it's very important to start out with a very specific topic/niche in mind.
If you like and if you feel comfortable, please share, and we'll help you narrow down your topic.

Ok...
Hi Guys. Sorry, I was on vacation so I couldn't get to your messages.
Actually Goodsites is French, but whatever, right? I was actually going to make it free, and make money off of Ads and Google Adsense. But, just like Lisa said, I can't just sticker up Google Adsense and bang up some bucks. I've got to read more about that.
I found this website that generates good names for your subject, http://domain-suggestions.domaintools.com/, but I can't find a specific subject that fits!
Since I am REALLY new to this, I don't really know what a niche is.
I'm still brainstorming! You should see all of the papers I have for my website, its embarrassing!!!

A niche is basically a small part of something larger.
If you sell diapers, your niche is parents of new borns and not teenagers
If you sell instruments, your niche is musicians and not webmasters
etc.
Find your niche market. Simple

Lajocar explained this well. However, I would like to add that a niche is a group of people who are very interested in a specific topic within a market. Going off the examples that Lajocar brought up...
Within the diapers market, there are several niches: parents who want to buy organic diapers, parents who want to use re-washable diapers, diaper allergies (i dunno if this exists or not, but just an example ), etc.
Examples of niches in the "Musical Instruments" market: left-handed guitars, learning how to take care of your guitar, etc.
In my opinion, the more specific the group is, the better off you will be able to address that group's needs, questions, and concerns. Also, another important thing to think about is how to add value to the people within the niche you choose, i.e. consider how people within the niche will benefit from your website.
I hope this helps.
