Default Mis-spelled URL

I have seen quite a few of sites that take advantage of url typos that takes you to a page full of goolge type ads. Do they work? Are they legal?

It's legal from what I've heard, but I also wonder how much money some of these people make doing this. I suppose it varies, depending on which domain they are going after. AdSense is really cracking down on MFA (Made for AdSense sites) so I'm not sure it's even worth it from an AdSense standpoint.

It may be legal, but its not ethical. People invest their valuable time to visit websites in search for information and they will get annoyed to find only ads and not information. Every webmaster should be responsible to provide informative and useful content to its visitors isn't it?

GoDaddy (and I am sure all other registrars do something similar) has a feature called "Cash Parking" that you can add to a domain for a monthly fee.

I am sure some people sign up for a variation/misspelled variations of a popular domain, cash park it, and when people land on it, they click the "sponsored ads" which look like links, and you make money.

Given that GoDaddy allows you to add it, I am sure it's legal... but I would imagine that its profitability varies quite a bit and is probably context-dependent.

For example, if I am going to websitebabble.com, but accidentally type wesbitebabble.com, I will immediately realize that I landed on the wrong website, so I will retype the url. But if someone does not know what the original websitebabble.com is supposed to look like, they may click on a link or two first before navigating away.

Sorry for my long-winded response

Interesting idea... I am curious how well it would work.

Yeah me too, from a personal point of view someone could get a bit annoyed seeing a big chunk of ads and you will only ever get unique visitors unless they blatantly stupid, I haven't really spoken to someone who's been successful doing it this way I've always assumed only the big company's do it.

What annoys me more is when a site filled with ads takes the domain name I wanted! Augh!

I got lucky, however, with the site I'm working on now, alternative-fashion.com. The domain name was taken, as was the .net version, but a week or so after I started playing with the idea both sites became availiable again within a couple days of one another.

I completely agree, I cant express how lucky you are! I emailed the guy who had my domain not sure that was a good idea as i feel that he is now alerted that he has a popular domain, he replied back stating that he plans to renew his domain i was completely devastated, the one i was going for was an actual ok site about hamsters apart from it really lacked content (hamster-care.com) the one im now after is (hamstercare.com) ive emailed the guy several times but he doesn't want to reply its just got ads all over it, what a waste and a hog.

Default how about it

what if you ad mispelled versions of your domain name into your meta tags???
seems like it won't necessarily increase your chances of coming up in a search but will take a stab at sites who do that unethical stuff.
