I recently moved to South Africa with my boyfriend, so I don't have to work while we're here. We return to Canada in June of 2010 and I'm already dreading it. I was a receptionist at a massage and reflexology clinic before we came here, and I hated it. The reception part was fine, but the insane amount of cleaning they had me do made me want to stab my eyes out. I also did some photography on the side, but my lack of confidence held me back quite a bit.

9-5 ??
Wow, you are so lucky or smart! I've been in real estate for 20 years and I probably put in 14-18 hrs per day. I probably made more money shooting pool on the side in college than I do now. Ouch!!!!!
I keep trying to be optimistic with the hope there is "a light at the end of the tunnel".

I currently work from home doing freelance graphics design, life insurance, web design, and soon to add real estate to the list. Whew! Talk about jack of all trades.
I started making a little money through affiliates, but North Carolina pass new laws that shut us down on some of the best ones like Amazon! Can you believe that?

I'm a middle school teacher in the public schools. I'd always had my teaching degree but never used it until my real estate license started collecting dust. I HAD to go into teaching to continue eating.

I am not sure, but here is the e-mail I was sent. I didn't even look into it because I was so disgusted.

We are writing from the Amazon Associates Program to notify you that your Associates account has been closed as of June 26, 2009. This is a direct result of the unconstitutional tax collection scheme expected to be passed any day now by the North Carolina state legislature (the General Assembly) and signed by the governor. As a result, we will no longer pay any referral fees for customers referred to Amazon.com or Endless.com after June 26. We were forced to take this unfortunate action in anticipation of actual enactment because of uncertainties surrounding the legislation’s effective date.
Please be assured that all qualifying referral fees earned prior to June 26, 2009 will be processed and paid in full in accordance with our regular referral fee schedule. Based on your account closure date of June 26, 2009, any final payments will be paid by September 1, 2009.
In the event that North Carolina repeals this tax collection scheme, we would certainly be happy to re-open our Associates program to North Carolina residents.
The North Carolina General Assembly’s website is http://www.ncleg.net/, and additional information may be obtained from the Performance Marketing Alliance at http://www.performancemarketingalliance.com/.
We have enjoyed working with you and other North Carolina-based participants in the Amazon Associates Program, and wish you all the best in your future.
Best Regards,
The Amazon Associates Team

To clarify: this law requires out-of-state merchants to collect sales tax from consumers who live in North Carolina, IF those out-of-state merchants have affiliates in North Carolina (even though this violates the US Constitution). To avoid collecting taxes, dozens, if not hundreds, of merchants have terminated their affiliate relationships. This is a lose-lose: the state won’t end up collecting sales taxes because these out of state merchants aren’t doing business in the state, and affiliate businesses are decimated in the process (so the state will collect less in income taxes, and possibly pay out unemployment benefits). This is what happened in North Carolina, New York and Rhode Island.
I work at home, collecting my un-employment, and my VA GI bill benefits while I try to re-tool my life to a more economy hardened job that can resist the recession/depression.
