Ok, Christmas eve is a 1/2 day for us. Last year was great because Christmas was on a Monday, so we had a 1/2 day the Friday before (since Christmas eve fell on the weekend) and then Monday off. And we had another 3-day weekend for New Year's. But this year, since Christmas is on a Tuesday, we will have Saturday & Sunday off, then a 1/2 day on Monday (Christmas eve), and then Tuesday off. They should just close the building on Christmas Eve!! How much work is really going to get done in just a 1/2 day, right before Christmas! All of our suppliers and field offices will be closed, but they want the coporate office to be opened! Why?? This place is driving me crazy!! I do realize that things could be worse - at least I don't have to work on Christmas day, but still....
We have the same thing here. There is a 1/2 day on Christmas Eve and then Christmas and Boxing Day (Dec 26th here in Canada) off. On the 1/2 day no work gets done as most bring in their kids and spouses for some fun.
December 31 is also a 1/2 with Jan 1st being the day off.
I'm taking several weeks off in December since the holiday season is really busy for me.

I've got to work both thanksgiving and Christmas. Mostly because the "power" wants to be powerful more so than anything else. He also like people to kiss ass and co-sign his view...right or [mostly] wrong...that's not my style so I get to work on the holidays.
My job is by no stretch of the imagination my career. It's just what i got into after 18 months of unemployment after the dot bomb.
The killer is that it's just not necessary to have all the staff scheduled on those days.

Sounds like a case of bad/arrogant manager. My last job was kind of like that. I had a great time for 1 and a half year at that place until this new manager came along. He totally made the place from excellent to worse. The place use to be so lively before, now anyone hardly spoke and joked around there. I had lost interest working and we knew we were just counting our days there.
I'm starting my new job on the first week of the new year. It seems like a good place and they offered me a better pay that my last place. Exciting
I'm currently in my first job, fresh out of college, although you could say it's more like an 8 to 6. It's been a real big learning curve, and I like that I'm in a place that lets me network and gain some experience; however, I can tell that I'll be ready to start working for myself and making my own decisions as soon as I get a nice setup online.
