Hi Lois
Well glad you chose this forum as your first! Welcome. Since this post is not really about web design or development I'll move it to the Website Babble lounge. Enjoy your stay here.

Welcome!
Welcome to the forums!
I hope you enjoy your time here & you will learn much within this forums as I have done so my self!!
Building a website takes lots of work & thought, so be sure to read through out Lisa & many other sites on how to create one!
A nice computer since your low on budget is
A nice HP labtop would work they range around 600-800 & work great with programs such as (Dreamweaver, Adobe, Etc.)
Mac Labtops can start off around 800-1000$ if your looking for a nice Linux server
I use a Toshiba Satellite I bought it for $600 (Clearance)
For website making software I would suggest
Adobe Photoshop Cs3-Cs4 (Graphic Designing)
Adobe Dreamweaver Cs3-Cs4 (Website Coding)
Fire Zilla (FTP Client)
Good Hosts recommendation; Justhost
Good luck!! & Glad to have you here

Welcome to the forums!
As for a notebook, any of the current notebooks will more than handle web site development. Just set a budget and shop around.

Welcome!
I'll just echo the rest of the gang, in saying you've come to the right place, if you want to learn how to build and how to profit from a website.
I've never owned a notebook myself, but here are several impressions..
My daughter-in-law, works for a local hospital. They bought her a brand new Dell with all the goodies. Won't post the cost, because it's out of sight, but Dell has an excellent reputation.
On the other hand, becuase of an injury-I have spent the past year, visiting local doctors, hospitals etc. One thing I noticed was how many of them are using these tiny Toshiba Notebook computers. I don't know anything about them, but they tell me they are smaller than normal, loaded with features and fairly inexpensive. I would surely check them out.

Welcome aboard. I have an HP, which is sooo slow it makes me cringe. Also, it has a finicky AC port to charge the battery, so I have to hold it just so. My daughter has a Dell and she likes it. She's on it all the time, downloading music and she hasn't had any trouble w/ performance. Sometimes you DO get what you pay for.

Glad to have you hear. Well, I wanted to help you but I'm not that familiar with the specific specs and brands that you should buy and their prices. Maybe you should try asking at Yahoo! Answers. They might have great ideas... who knows?
See you around.

Hi Lois
Any modern spec pc will do the job for you, what you are paying more for when you up the graphics card and pricessor/ram is the ability to carry out your tasks faster. Im still using an old P4 processor on one of my machines and I build websites. Before you buy have a think what else you need the machine for and how much storage capacity you are likely to use. If its will just be for surfing the net and word processing don't bother spending loads of money just get a bog standard machine. I've also used my P4 machine for rendering light wave scenes (3d modelling package) and it does the job fine although a bit slower than I would like. Whats your budget is a good start in determining a good deal or place to look?

Welcome Lois
Hi Lois:
Welcome to the forum, there is a lot of knowledge here. I do not know any html or own any website making software except SBI. I think it is good to know but if you do not know any web making software. Do not think you can not build a website if you do not know or own Dreamweaver and Photoshop, because when I started I knew nothing about these programs.
Welcome and Good luck!
