Default Next Big Thing

I was sitting here at home wondering what the next big thing will be on the web. I thought it would be a great question for the forum. So, what do you guys think?

"Bill Gate-ish" visionaries are the one's that get the jump on the industry. Is there one among us?

I think movies is the next big thing. It has already started.

Blu-ray will probably be one of the last (if not the last) popular physical media for movies. With the speed of the Internet in the Megabytes, and a country like Japan launching an Internet satellite capable of transferring Gigabytes/second, it only make sense for movies.

This means that renting/purchasing a movie may eventually be like MP3's.

Wow, I didn't know about the Japan satellite! This may make it easier for armature movie makers to sell their stuff to large studios and individuals too. Interesting.

Whatever the next big thing is, sure would be nice if I had a hand in developing it. Can you say filthy rich?

This is a very broad question, but an interesting one. I have thought about this very same question from time to time. I'm sure we've all mind-blastered this question. Here's the deal, whatever the NEXT BIG THING is, there are millions of thinkers out there trying to figure this one out.

Anyways, I thought this website was rather interesting when I ran across it. I see more companies starting to provide services such as this one slowly but surely. Make sure you watch the video and tell me what you think: http://helloworld.com

It would be cool if a community of people on a blog, or forum such as this one put our minds at work and come up with THE NEXT BIG THING and launch from right here.

Just a few thoughts

Interesting question. Here are two thoughts/questions:

1. For those in the past who invented "the next big thing" ... of course, they were passionate about it and believed in it enough to overcome all the hurdles and challenges, and to keep going, but did they know it was going to take off and become the next big thing?

2. now, thinking about what the next big thing would be, here are two (there are definitely more) obvious characteristics that I came up with just now:

a) it has to touch very hot buttons for a large portion of the target audience
or
b) it has to solve an important problem or make something a lot simpler or more convenient.

Given that I am already working on the next big thing, I won't share any more specifics here! just kidding, of course sort of

Default 2 types?

There seems to be 2 types of "next big things". The first might be a major improvement on an already existing product. Something that kicks it up a big notch all at once, like DVD over VHS.

The other would be a true revelation so to speak. Like satellite TV or something. I don't think I am going to be able to invent cows that give Budweiser instead of milk, so I guess I will keep plodding along after the first one. Just about everything we see can be made a little bit better in some way or another. So, we keep at it!

I read a little quote somewhere where one of the founders of either YouTube or PayPal, it was someone who graduated from the university I am at, had commented on how he came up with the 'next big thing.' He said that he had started up several businesses online, and most of them failed, but eventually he struck gold. That was the advice he gave: just keep trying.

Basically if you spend all day brainstorming about what the next best thing might be, instead of implementing your ideas, you'll never strike the gold.

Default True words

I think that is one of the few totally true statements I have heard on the net. Just do it! Plans don't make you money unless you initiate them. One of the nice things about online business, is that it's fine to learn as you go. So go!

Default Web Based Operating Systems and Applications

Well to start off, I want to say that the unlike many things that grow at a set rate, technology grows expedentially, meaning that the faster it grow the faster it grows....Not addition but Multiplication of knowledge and information.

In the past the jump from a 386 to a 486 processor was big, now we are jumping gigahertz, in the past we went from a 28.8kbps 33.6kbps to a 56kbps seemed like a big change, today we are jumping mbps you get the picture.

What I am trying to get at is that today there is not so much of bottleneck involved with the change of technology or the new ideas that may come.

With the speed of internet connections my guess would be the capability of a web based operating systems or web based applications.

There is so much of a push in the industry to move from a product to a service that this would make since as far as marketing for new age companies, and you will see this push already with microsoft office live and google apps.

As far as updates you would never have to take the time to update anything, your computer now being more or less a terminal would just have the new version as it connected to the server/site the next time. Internet security would mostly be a thing of the past because all routing would be controlled at the data center not at a user level.

There is a lot of places this line of thinking can bring, discuss...

Thumbs up

I'd expect a post like this to have more post cuz it's BIG.
I realize it was posted months ago but there are big things happening, like google buying up all that bandwith for the google phone technology since television is moving to digital and their selling all the bandwidth. I find this interesting because I hear that with the google phone you'll be able to get free service for setting it up so all the advertisments roll accross the top of the screen. Sweet.
