Default I'm About to Be LAYED OFF.......

Having one job for the rest of your life? Job security in this day and age? Yeah right! I found out on Friday that me and my coworkers (we work in IT) will be laid off and IBM (who we thought we were being outsourced to) decided not bring us over - why? Because they don't want to pay us! They want to bring temps/contractors/new folks to do our jobs, jobs that we've been doing for the past 5-8 years. What sense does it make to bring in someone new to do something you know how to do and they don't? Initially, I was upset but I thought about it and then I started think about how I'll now have more time to get my website up and running and I'll be taking some time off, I can take it easy and do that. Then I started getting excited about it realizing that something else is going to happen for me and you know what? I'm going to make it happen. These companies and corporations don't care about their people, we're all just a number to them, a cost to them so BUMP em!

Things happen for a reason, I firmly believe that now.

I am so sorry to hear about that, but I'm a firm believer in things happen for a reason so as you said, you can look at this as an opportunity to let your business grow.

And that's the beauty of working for yourself. Yes, it can be a little scary at first but the rewards of setting your own hours, not having to answer to anyone, loving what you do everyday is priceless.

You'll be just fine. I think it's all going to work out in the end.

Its better bottom line profits for the share holders and the folks at the top of the ladder, unfortunately.

Your bad news (which I'm sorry to hear) is very common within the IT industry and I've also experienced it along with family & friends.

The good thing about IT is that its so diverse and IT people are always going to be needed. Having experience in a company like IBM will only strengthen your resume and hopefully you'll pickup another job in no time.

Default Thank you

Thank for all of your positive feedback, look at that. And Lisa, I really like how you put it 'loving what you do everyday is priceless' so true that is. I love writing and I love computers and I love helping people so putting all three things together equals satisfaction and success to me and that's what I'm looking forward to doing. Thank you again!!

It is hard to imagine a better set of qualifications for finding a good life in this business. From your initial comments I am sure you will be more satisfied with your life when you learn to be on your own. I know I cannot even imagine being any other way. In a world that encourages me to be more cynical every day I get myself to look up by observing folks like you.

You may indeed have to work at another "job" while you are getting established but don't let that deter you because once you have an adequate start every step builds on the other. Study Lisa's stuff. It is great. Notice how she majors on content and marketing. There are only two things any successful business person must be able to do for themselves, manage and market. You can farm everything else out if you choose, but never those.

Good success!

James

Default James, you're about to make me cry!

Thank you sooooooooooooooooooo much for your post. See, this is what I'm talking about. To me, the power of the internet is not about money, it's all about communication I personally think. And since we have this kind of power, how important it is to use it in the right way, to encourage, to empower, to upbuild and then everything else will follow.

What an inspiration and that how I get my ideas to write/blog, by feeding off what I get from threads and posts like this. This website is a treasure and I think we're each finding out in our own way just how valuable it is and important it is.

Thank you James so much, your words mean a lot to me and will stay with me for a long time.

Youch, big companys are always like that its so typical they don't understand its peoples lives that there juggling with not just numbers definitely in need of some re-consideration.

Have you got any other lines of work just for a backup or on the sideline its always good to have a plan B through life

Hope everything sorts out man, best of luck!

Default Yet ANOther idea....

Lisa,

This question is for you, Gurl! I just saw a link from your RSS feed website and I did not know that domain reselling was that big. I'm wondering if I should do this instead of my website first and maybe both. Tell me, how did you come across this and if you wouldn't mind sharing your honest thoughts on this. I want to make my full-job as a internet entrauperner and I am willing to put all the time it takes - since I'll have a lot of it-

You also should have some folks working for you too- Hint-hint-hint

LOL, not ready to hire anyone just yet. Domain reselling is big for me because I have a popular site on website creation. I would never recommend you jump in and do this and you aren't ready to compete in a very competitive niche.

As I said in my blog post, you can resell domains casually on the side by referring your friends and family to build sites, but people who are making a lot of money as a reseller generally have sites on web design and website creation.

Just like anything else, it takes time to generate the traffic and income.

But if you know people who want to build sites why not sign up as a reseller and send them to your site to buy domains and hosting? To me it's a great way to make some extra money on the side since everyone wants a website these days.

In my opinion, everyone should be a domain and hosting reseller. LOL Who doesn't know someone who wants a website? Might as well make a commission off their hosting and domains right? Just follow the link in my blog post to join. Just understand I am not guaranteeing an instant $57,000 like the top reseller. I'm sure that guy or gal has a ton of traffic and the right audience.

That blog post has created a ton of conversation and emails lately. Perhaps I need to do a more lengthy blog post on residual commissions. That's really the way to build your income out here.

I've been reselling since 2002 so the residuals are building and building. It's funny a lot of people assume I make a lot of money from Google AdSense but 90% of my income is from domain and hosting reselling.

Default Sounds good

LOL...I'm not expecting 57,000 right away, maybe within a year's time but I just thought that domain reselling was so big, that's what really caught my attention. I will join (even though I think I already did) but now I'm thinking if I should go ahead and create a blog first and then do the website and I especially like your section on writing. Very, very informative and also for the fact that I never have a problem of coming up with something to write or blog about. Never have had writer's block, don't even know what it is.

Thanks again. I will spend time reading your other site and learning everything I can and I will be bugging you again and once you're ready to starting hiring some folks - make sure I'm one of them. You never know what the future may hold-

I mainly put that "disclaimer" up for others reading this thread too. I just didn't want to create false hope or make people believe it's an instant riches kinda thing.

Glad you joined Renee! It's a great program. And yes, you definitely want to map out a plan for you site/blog or whatever you're going to do... first. Then start working on monetizing that traffic and promoting your reseller store.

What I would do is register a domain name and redirect it to your reseller store like I did with websitepalace. You can get names for cheap at GoDaddy or NameCheap but I think GoDaddy has free domain forwarding. The reason I did that is the reseller URL is ugly and hard to remember and it's easier to send people to an easy-to-remember address than that long address they give you.

Default I should be there now, Lisa

I don't think I did it correctly before. I was at work so I have to be careful about what I do online but I"m home now and I did it. Once I chose to subscribe, your 2-Create-A-Website Blog now shows up in my Yahoo web page. I have lots of reading to do now- Let me know if still don't see my name.

Default I Can Identify

Hi Rwskate,
I know exactly where you are coming from. I went through a similar situation where in, yes I found myself out of a job. And yes I too have always been a firm believer in "Things Happen for a Reason" and When One Door Closes Another Opens."

I accepted what I was presented with and took the opportunity to get involved with online opportunities. In all that I do with this business and all that I've learned, there is no way I could have come this far in such a short period of time if I was working FT.

I consider it a Blessing in disguise and feel this is where I was meant to be today!

Much Success!
