I suppose there is some software out there for spell checking, but I use two. One is the spell check that comes with the free word processing program of openoffice.org. The other is a spell checker I use with a small little free program, I use for writing online articles. It's called Rough Draft and is free to download.
Others can probably give you an independent type spell checker..
As for afraid of your spelling and grammar, I would say don't be afraid to write. I was brought up speaking and spelling some old-what I call Idaho Speak, which basically was a bunch of cobbled up, country boy slang. I still have trouble, but with spell checkers, reading other sites and using dictionary.com, I can usually find or come up with the correct spellings I need.
I would say to jump in and start writing. The thing to do, is to get your content written, then go back and edit and spell check before publishing. I now find writing and spell checking a joy, instead of a burden...
