Arrow another 'index.htm' question...

hey you guys, i'm still a beginner at this!

here's a question... it's still about the 'index.htm' file. if my friend wants to update this site (just the simple headings on the content), and I have a hard time finding the correct 'index.htm' file (there's actually alot of different 'index.htm' files on the host server for this site)... if i'm not sure which one it is, then could i just go to this website online, and select view source from windows explorer, then copy and paste the html onto something like dreamweaver, change what I need to change, then delete the original 'index.htm' file and replace it with the updated file i just did on DW? also, would the content i copied and pasted straight from the 'view source' option be missing anything? i know that i would need to rename the file to index.htm, or whichever file it is... right?

i guess in the beginning i should backup that original index.htm file in case i mess anything up i can just replace it with the first... right?

let me know if any of this sounds confusing and doesn't make sense...

thanks!!!

I think it should work, because your source code includes the CSS code... unless of course something else is missing.

So, try it, to see if it works. It's smart that you copy it and name the file with a different name at first, in case you you accidentally delete a few pieces of code, you would still have the original.

I am not sure why you can't find the index.htm... there can only be 1 index.htm on the main directory. There could be index-old-blah-blah.htm or index12xyz.htm, but only one "index.htm" Do you see what I mean? Also, in each subdirectory, there could be other "index.htm" but the source code of the main page of your website is on the main directory.

Does this make sense?

Let me know where you are in the process right now.

Hope this helps a little.

NO. IE uses NotePad to view souce so everything is there.

As far as which "index.htm" to use, you need to get the index from the specific directory for which the index is for. eg if you have a "products" directory with an index to the pages within that directory and you want to change it, then that index is the one you want to modify. You then upload it to the SAME place it came form.

Take your time and be careful when modifiying indexes

It's a good idea to backup a file before doing changes to it. Your hosting space might check hierarchy of your first file/index/starting page. It is good to know which one is being read first.

Say for example you have three starting pages, to wit;

index.htm
index.html
home.htm

...but its index.html being read as the starting page of your site.
