Arrow how to find the index.htm file???

Hey Everyone,
Quick question... I have a friend who has a non-profit website and he let someone else do the work, which actually turned out fantastic, but he paid a pretty penny.

Now, we're trying to upgrade the website without having to contact the web designer in order to save money; we are able to access his host, godaddy, and go into the control panel and change whatever... the only problem is that the site is pretty complicated and we just want to change simple items and headings on the homepage... now, the problem is that we don't know what the name of the homepage is... index.htm, index_old.htm, etc. We've tried to pull each up, but they don't really look like the original homepage on the website.

Ok, the question... how can we get the name of the homepage file? Properties didn't help, we tried everything. We need to know if it's an 'index' html file or what.... Help!!

Thanks guys.

hmmm... this may be too simple (i.e. i hope i am not insulting your intelligence), but let's start with this...

When you go to the website's homepage, what do you see on the address bar of your browser after the domain extenstion (.com, .org, or whatever...). For example, when you visit the home page, if the address bar says website.com/default/etcetc/index.html let us know what it says after the .com (in this case, it would be "default/etcetc/index.html").

Or if you're comfortable with it, share the url with us, and I will help you find it!

hey ssmorgan,
the website is www.timbuktufoundation.org
that's pretty much the homepage. it's a complex website, i think. when you take a look at the host's server, there are alot of files and folders that have been uploaded to it. but when you go to that actual website... there is no 'index.htm' at the end of the url. that's the problem. if you can help me figure this out, i would really appriciate it! thanks for your help in this!

Hmm... so I compared www.timbuktufoundation.org and www.timbuktufoundation.org/index.htm and they seem identical to me.

So the index.htm is the source code for the homepage.

I hope I am understanding your question correctly, but when you login to see all your different files and folders, look for a folder called "public_html" and then click on a file called "index.htm"

Usually, there is a default page that is pulled up one someone visits homepage (www.timbuktufoundation.org). In this case, the default page seems to be /index.htm

I feel like this may not be answering your question, so please let me know if you're still having trouble.

I think the confusion is that the 'index.htm' is understood..

On webservers there are certain files that are 'default' pages.. usually they are either index.htm/asp/php/whatever.. or default.htm/asp/php/whatever..

The index.htm should be there in the folder list of the websites files... but if you just type in www.timbuktufoundation.org, the web server will automatically know the default page, in this case index.htm, and pull that file.

I can go deeper into it if you still don't understand, but I don't want to confuse any more than I probably already have.

Arrow another 'index.htm' question...

thanks for the responses you guys, i'm still a beginner at this!

there's one other question for you guys though. it's still about the 'index.htm' file. if my friend still wants to update this site (just the simple headings on the content), and I have a hard time finding the correct 'index.htm' file (there's actually alot of different 'index.htm' files on the host server for this site)... if i'm not sure which one it is, then could i just go to this website online, and select view source from windows explorer, then copy and paste the html onto something like dreamweaver, change what I need to change, then delete the original 'index.htm' file and replace it with the updated file i just did on DW? also, would the content i copied and pasted straight from the 'view source' option be missing anything? i know that i would need to rename the file to index.htm, or whichever file it is... right?

i guess in the beginning i should backup that original index.htm file in case i mess anything up i can just replace it with the first... right?

let me know if any of this sounds confusing, it's late for me, i should be in bed.
