some qn about web hosting
Hi, new here, there are some doubts I would like to clarify regarding domains and web hosts.
1) If I buy a domain, is there a need for a webhost if I only plan to post a few articles here and there? Do domains have any bandwidth?
2) how much is the price for webhosting usually?i know that domains go for around 10dollar a year, but webhosting goes for 3-4$/month from what I've read..that's quite a lot for somebody thats starting out?
3) how do these webhosts work? is it possible if i buy a server outside for a hundred plus and then host it on the server itself?

1) Yes you will need a web host. A domain is simply the URL. The hosting is space to store your files and the bandwidth so people can view your website and its files.
2) Yes domains go from $10-$15 a year. I would recommend using Godaddy for the domain name since it's $10 a year. Web hosting is such a saturated market that the price of hosting has gone down ALLOT compared with a few years ago. $3-4 a month really isn't much at all for what you get. Your website has endless possibilities. Compare web hosting to a small shop, in my opinion you have more possibilities with a online business and the price is so cheap.
3) Yes you could do that but you wouldn't need your own server if you’re just started out. A dedicated server is what youtube, myspace, facebook would use. $3-$10 hosting will be more than enough to start out with, in fact most people will never need a dedicated server.

well but 10dollars a month adds up to 12x10=120 a year which you could have used to buy a server yourself? + if your website is going to go on for 2 or 3 years wouldnt it be more worth it to get a server yourself ?

Im afraid buying your own server would be more in the thousands. Renting a server will cost anywhere from $100-$500 a month depending on the specs.
If it was $100 for a server I would certainly get one hehe

Also you need to know what is installed on the server. You may have to buy software for the server etc. There is allot more costs involved with setting it up and running it. Personaly I don't see a problem with normal hosting since you can upgrade without a problem. HostGators cheapest dedicated server is $174.00/month so this shows there must be more to it than just buying the server.
This is beyond my knowledge. Maybe someone with more knowledge on servers can help you out.

Hosting your site on your own server is a bit more complicated than just purchasing and running a server. As sequencehosting mentioned, you have to think about software that needs to be installed, managing your server, and also powering your server. If you do it from your home, your hydro bill will definitely increase. Also don't forget about the time needed to upgrade your software/hardware as well as a plan to backup your server (very important).
You will also need to think about transfer speeds and bandwidth. Many ISPs cap (limit) the bandwidth for its users, and the connection speed may not be sufficient if many concurrent users connect to your site.
It is easier to pay the few bucks a month and have someone host your site.

1) You need a webhost to host the domain. If you just buy a domain, you won't be able to do anything with it. You need a webhost to upload the content.
2) Webhosting is $3.95 per month on host monster right now. Most are in the range of $4-$7 per month. It's really not a lot of money. Think about how much it would cost to run a real store.
3) I wouldn't recommend you buying your own server. It's harder to manage your own server and it usually costs more because it's not shared.

Ok, thanks for clarifying my doubts. But don't domains have like a little bit of free space (maybe50MB) for a few pages? or totally none at all

None at all im afraid. With a domain name I believe you can redirect it to a different website. But im not 100% certain if you can do that without hosting.

Often you can get a reduced price per month if you pay for 2 or 3 years of hosting. I got a reduced price with Webhostingpad by paying for two years. I see that they now offer hosting for less than $2 a month if you pay for three years.
