Are you currently using Godaddy for hosting or just domain? If its just domain I would recommend staying with Godaddy, it’s the most popular for domains and I think it’s cheaper than HostGator. So it would be less hassle keeping it with Godaddy you can just change the name servers by logging in to Godaddy. You will get the new name servers in an email from HostGator.

I have heard Linux is the best and Windows has errors. Something like that. If I were you I would use Linux because most people do. Its nothing to do with your computer I think its what operating system the server uses.

Default Sort of...

Windows servers are designed for Microsoft products and technically educated programmers who know ASP and the like are OK with it. But even many of the largest sites and the typical users of the net otherwise (like pretty much everyone on this forum) prefer using php/MySQL and other open source products—many consider php the best way to go regardless.

You are right in that the Linux/Windows environment we are talking about here relates to the servers on the host, not on our computers. Either one will work.

The biggest problem with Windows servers is that they do not support some things like .htaccess which are very important. For one thing, without .htaccess you cannot use includes except by programming your site as php rather than straight html or using shtml pages. I go with php anyway, but is an unwelcome necessity if you are just beginning and don't need another layer of complexity. And if you are not familiar with them yet you will soon see that managing your site without includes is unthinkable.

Thanks for clearing that up James I should have left that out really. I did know Linux was the proffered system though.

That reminds me when I signed up for Hostgator I fought it was to do with my computer....... They should make that clear for us beginners.

PHP includes are so useful. It saves so much time when making changes to anything repetitive.
