Default Hosting Review Site - Good Idea?

I've seen a lot of hosting review sites. Do you guys think it's a good idea to do one of these? I'm guessing the competition is very thick though. Seems like it would be a good idea to make money since hosting sites generally pay good commissions and the products are cheap.

I think it's like anything else. If you make your review site better than what's out there you can make a lot of money.

Most hosting review sites are obvious to me that the owner is promoting his or her affiliate links. I am never convinced that they actually know much about or use the product and they all tend to look the same.

What I love about Lisa's sites is that you can tell she uses the products she talks about and like one of her blog posts said, people don't mind giving you the commission if they feel you are being honest and you really do own the product.

For example, if a web host you are reviewing has a free site builder. Show a sample of the builder and how it works. Give me screenshots. Show me something beyond the price and the basic hosting features.

Be different, stand out and I think you can be successful at this kind of site. But a simple site with a list of hosting prices, web space and bandwidth stats is a waste of web space to me. There are already too many of those kinds of sites out there.

Hey miles;

yup, it's a very popular and broad niche. I'd say it depends on how much you know about the different types of packages out there.

Not all hosting packages are equal by a long shot and different packages suit different projects.

if you can narrow the niche down to a certain type of package that's suitable for specific projects then go for it.

eg, the BANS guys recommend hostgator as it runs well with their software. on the flip side, whilst HG are good you'd be sharing an IP with other webmasters - which has it's down side

Good luck
Austin.
