Welcome!
Welcome to the Babble, Amy. If you have time, stop by the welcome forum and post a thread of introduction.
Since I am here I will tell you that although I do not use Hostgator I have been here a while and seen this question answered over and over. Hostgator gets top recommendations as a host so I do not think you would go wrong with them. I like Dreamhost and others have favorites but if you read through previous threads you will find far more references for Hostgator than any other host.
You are smart to ask that question on a forum like this and get answers from customers rather than sites that appear to be reviewing hosts. Most of them are affiliates trying to sell you on certain hosts and many recommend terrible services as if they were great.

I also asked this question, i have to say HostGator is amazing ! First of all there customer support is spot on ! They have a live chat customer service which is perfect and i had to use it many times while transfering my website.
They have so many features which is so easy to install and there cost it so cheap, the service they provide could cost twice as much and i would still use it.
My last host was a drag and drop one and hostgator even managed to transfer it for free but im still re-designing it now. HostGator transferd it in about 2 hours ! they do it for free as well.
I highly recommend HostGator although i did have a tought time getting used to there control pannel since there is so many options.
Just out of interest what sort of website are you thinking of doing/moving?

i have a major issue w/ hostgator. they robbed me of my signature domain. i registered it for 5 years and they conveniently have 'no record' of the purchase. If you register w/ them, do not register a domain, they will sell it from below your feet.

I never hosted with them but as far as there support I don't personally like them... They just don' give you the "warm welcome" they give you more of the "what do you want? Are you going to buy it or not.." welcome (but that is just me)

Yeah that may be true for there techical support but i don't think any company, im sure everyone who works there has some sort of insentive to sell so thats why them may be a bit pushey.
There technical support is truely amazing, because im a bit of a website noob at the moment i have had to contact them so many times and i have to say every time i contact them they help with the issue very quickly.
My last webhost had the worst support which was basically suport tickets that took a day or 2 for a reply and there help was basically copy and pasted from there knowledge base and it didnt help at all. For me to transfer my domain it took 2 weeks. No jokes.
Hostgator is amazing !

lisa - this was a first for me. i bought 3 domains from them before i really understood what i was doing - when i wasn't receiving email from the main account i had, i checked w/ them to find out what was going on and realized that it was the only domain that was sold. what sense would it make for me to register a .com for 1yr while i registered a .org and a .net for 2? i still can't get them to give me the other two on my primary domain registrar.

TheLadyWrites,
Thats really sad to here, i have read a few people comments on their domain registers.
I guess GoDaddy is the way to go.
Can't/wont they do anything about it?

Host Gator
After doing a lot of research and getting some good advice here, I also went with Host Gator. But...I found the site difficult to configure, at least for me. Perhaps it just that I have been off the web for years, and everything seemed new to me...Some of things like email links and site links that were supposed to work directly from my desktop did not work. Although Tech Support was good, we could not figure out how to correct the issues.
I had some other minor issues. Both of these were due to their free site builder programs. It took me some time, to finally figure out whey they did not work. Basically you had to sign up anew for both of them. The wait was 24-48 hours before use. The first time I tried this, it did not take. I called Tech support a second time, and they set up and said it would be working in about 6 hours...It never did. Another week of waiting did not resolve the issue.
After another try, I finally gave up. I have to say that the CEO did email and offered to help, but I had already canceled my account and made up my mind. I was advised would take 15 days to credit my credit card...After 20 days, and no credit, I wrote back...An email from them stated that I had not requested a credit...Another 15 day wait, ensued before we finally recieved credit. Naturally, I wasn't enirely happy with their cancellation policy.
Host Gator may be OK and a lot of people here use them. But for myself, I don't require everything they offer and will look for a smaller hosting company.

I can't recommend them, especially now that they advertise as "unlimited" resources with their plans. That stuff's just plain sneaky.
Hostgator gave away the passwords to our account at one point, and someone filled up a subdomain with a lot of pages. Turns out it was because of their billing system (many people affected) and the only notification we got from them was a really rude email months later.
Beware of reviews of them btw - they offer people $50+ per new customer through their coupon codes
