Default Register and point.

Is there a problem that might happen with registering with 1&1 because of there domain reg cost and then pointing to my host of gator.

That is what I have doing for my 3 domains I have now.

I'm not sure I understand. Shouldn't be a problem as long as you change your nameserver info to point to Hostgator. Not sure what the cost has to do with it. Maybe I'm misunderstanding.

It doesn't matter that 1&1 is cheaper. You can still register there and then update your nameserver info to point to hostgator after you sign up with an account with them.

Should be no problem at all. If I understand, you are concerned that 1&1 may not like that you have chosen to point the Domain you have with them to a cheaper host. I use Host Department for my Domians and two separate webhosts for hosting my websites. My Domains are pointed to my hosts. I even used Host Department for their free service when they had it and not one Domain I kept toward them, lol ! They didn't care at all

(Now watch them zap my Domains cause I said that )

(Big Smiles) guess we'd like to stay off the hit list But seriously I think domain hosters are happy that they are getting one's money. They know that you really want THAT domain and will pay each year (or however chunks you pay them 2years, 3 etc) to have it. To me is more like paying rent cause one never really owns it. The fact that they provide you a way to point it to another web host is proof enough for me that they expect you may just do that. I think we're safe my friend

I'd like to throw out a q if anyone knows. Can one buy a Domain for life ?
