Some domains for free! And they are not something that can "given away". The end user doesn't have complete control over the domain name. He/She cannot sell it or get it hosted at other hosting companies. It stays stuck with the parent domain.

Free hosting sites, etc provide sub-domains for free because it means more sites with more ads. This increases revenue for the site. Same with blogger.

Hope my post has cleared some of your doubts.

Take blogger for example:

# Blogger is owned by Google which also owns Adsense.
# Some bloggers display Adsense ads: 30% of revenue goes to Google, 70% goes to the blogger. Now if Google provides more sub-domains for free (which they do), it will mean more blogs, more ads and more 30%s.

So ultimately, Google wins.

Some free webhosting sites provide free sub-domains, but push their ads/banners blatantly in the face. And they also push popups. For example: Bravehost.com

In the first case, you won't get any profit.

In the case of blogger.com, Google owns blogger.com and also blogspot.com and at the same time Adsense. So in the end, it is profitable.

No problem about your questions
