Default Hosting questions

When they say "domains allowed unlimited" does that mean I can make as much website as i want?

I'm thinking about using hostgator...baby package.

Yes it does. As long as you stay within your space allotment you can host as many domains as you want. It's a great feature of hostgator.

Domain names are limited but space is not. Check the chart again http://www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml You are allowed 600GB of space with unlimited domains. So you could host 4,043 domains (just an arbitrary number) on your account as long as the total amount of files (images, video, etc.) don't go over the 600 GB limit.

You can login at anytime and see how much space you've used. Trust me... it takes a heck of a lot of files to go over 600 GB. With all my videos, images, files, etc. on 2create I am not even up to 1 GB on my account.

It's funny because years ago you really had to pay close attention to the amount of space hosts offer but now, due to competition, the amount is so high... it's really all about advertising and competition. The average Webmaster doesn't even use 100 MB of space and Hostgator, for example is offering 600,000 MB (or 600 GB).

I think my first host in 1998 offered 20 MB of space. Boy have times changed.

thanks for telling me this, when people come to your website does that count as space/bandwidth too? what if you have a lot of traffic?sorry for my stupid questions, i just dont want to get charge extra money by the host.

These aren't dumb questions at all... they are very valid as most hosts don't explain all this. I'm sure other people may have these same questions.

Yes, when people come to your website, they download everything on a given page to their PC. So with every visit, that takes up "bandwidth" on your host's servers. So when you see that "bandwidth" or "transfer" limit a host is advertising, that's what it's referring to. Many hosts describe it as a "traffic limit" because it's easier to digest and understand. But technically it's the file transfer from your host's server to the visitor's computer when they view a web page, play a video, etc.

Just like disk space, bandwidth has gotten extremely generous too and it would take thousands and thousands and thousands of visitors per day to reach the limit of most web host's. You can also check your monthly bandwidth usage by logging into your account... just like you can your disk space limit.

I've never gone over any traffic or disk space limit with any site I've had over the past 10 years.

Any time you buy a domain name you have to pay for it. This has nothing to do with Hostgator's hosting plan. Their plan is that they will host an unlimited amount of your domains but you are responsible for buying the domains and you can host as many of them as you want with them.

I don't know of any hosting company that offers unlimited hosting of domains and pays for all the domains too. Domain names are so cheap these days I still think that's a very very good deal.
