Best Host for a large site
I am getting the material together to start a large website. Probably over 250 pages. I was wondering what would be the best hosting company for that size of a site. I currently have Powweb for my current site but I am not sure that is the best choice for this larger site. I want a hosting company that charges one price for multiple domains because I may have to do that. Thanks for any advice.

Are you going to have a lot of large images, video, etc. because to be honest 250 pages doesn't have to take up a lot of room. Powweb is currently giving you 1500 GB of space right? That's a heck of a lot of space.
2create has about 150 pages and I'm only using 100 GB and that's mostly old images I have stored. Hostgator is best though if you want to host multiple domains.

reiguy, you may want to look into dedicated hosting. I wouldn't use shared hosting for such a site. Hostgator also has some dedicated plans.

I will check out Hostgator and compare to Powweb
I will have a lot of images but it looks like Powweb has enough room for that. Multiple subdomains is probably the way I will go because I will probably start with information on a few states and then expand as I obtain the information. If I put all the information on one site it will look incomplete because various areas of the country will not be included initially. Also if I create a subdomain for each state or area it will look more local. What do you think?

I'm not sure about it looking more "local" but it is definitely a good way to divide up your content, especially if you have a lot of information on every state. Just keep in mind, when you create a subdomain the search engines treat it as a separate site. For example Google treats 2createawebsite.com and blog.2createawebsite as two different sites.

How does it affect me if the search engines consider it two separate sites?
Just wondering the pros and cons.

First of all, if your main site does not have a lot of traffic yet (particularly from Google) then it it's not going to matter too much because both sites are trying to build up popularity.
Also a disclaimer... This is just from personal experience and I cannot speak for everyone so maybe others could chime in with what they've noticed.
When I add a new page to 2createawebsite and link to it from an existing page that has an established PageRank, that new page tends to get spidered faster, get a PageRank faster, etc. Which makes sense because I'm linking to it from a page that already has an established PageRank.
When you create a new subdomain you have to start all over with PageRank (in other words, the importance of that site in the eyes of Google). So it's sort of like starting all over again. Again, if your existing site does not have a lot of traffic, low PageRank, etc. then this may not matter as much to you.
The bottom line is, if you build up quality content and get good inbound links you can still build up the site's reputation, traffic, etc. I don't want to deter you from creating a sub domain because it may indeed be a good solution for your idea. Just understand if your main site has a pagerank of a 4 and your create a new subdomain then it will take longer for that content to be seen as "important" in the eyes of Google.
I don't like to emphasize PR too much because I think people get too involved with it. But at least it tells you where you are on Google's radar if nothing else. I don't obsess over PR like some Webmasters do but I do like to keep track of it and the above is just something I've noticed.

Lots to think about
It does seem like I should start out with subdomains because if I add them later it will affect the page rank. I was thinking I could start out with the main site and when it got too big put some subdomains on it but maybe that isn't the best way. Thanks for the insight.

To Big might need protection
Hi Lisa thanks for the tip. Hey Im afraid that this idea might be way to big for just me. In your experience is there some way I can get protection about my idea so I can share it without it getting stolen. Also if you were in my shoes an you had a brillant idea would you put a team of people in place to help? Im really serious I think this idea is going to be one of the best new ways to do what it does that would beat all other qinourmas sites in its field. Looking for advisors/partners
Thanks Jeff

To be honest, I'd probably go at it alone (at least at first) but that's the way I've always been. I always admire people who work well with a team of people and if you can get together a group you really trust then that could be the best way to go. Be careful who you team up with and make sure you define roles. A lot of people partner up with their friends but realize they don't make the best business partners.
Also make sure you really know the person's work ethic. It amazes me the number of emails I get from strangers who want to partner with me and that sort of baffles my mind. Maybe I'm just too much of a loner, but I have to know and trust the people I work with and that's the advice I would give you going forward if you are really serious about your idea.
Also if you want to discuss this further please start a new thread in the Brainstorming section. I'm afraid we've sort of hijacked Tom's thread and want to keep this on topic.
