Default Dedicated Servers, Suggestions?

I have hosted sites with rackshack.com now called ev1server.net I believe and I had no problems there, but I was just interested to see if anybody here has some suggestions on dedicated web servers and any good or bad feedback about the one you all may have used?

Yes, I know that was a run on sentence....oops.

I have used [site removed] for months and I am pleased with their services. I think they are a great company.

Johnjr, I find it very interesting/suspicious that every post you make here recommends the same site. I apologize if I'm wrong but it makes us all suspicious when someone (especially a new member) only responds to certain threads (web hosting) and continues to plug the same site.

I welcome your participation here but I hope you decide to contribute in other ways as well. Feel free to advertise any site you wish in your sig file but to get the most out of this form it's best to contribute in other ways. If that is not your site, my apologies but I have to keep an eye on self promotion.

Thumbs up WebHostingPad

I'm going through webhostingpad.com for all my sites and I absolutely love it. It's fairly cheap (about $150 for two years) and comes with TONS of usable storage space (1.7Tb memory, 17Tb bandwidth). You can register as many domains and emails as you want and it comes with all kinds of amazing tools. It's all run through the cPanel, so a little bit knowledge in html/css back-end editing is definitely good, but it's nothing to be scared of. I think their url is webhostingpad.com, check it out.

If you have any questions feel free to email me at Johnny@RidiculousWeb.com

I use a local hosting website here in South Africa and it is very cheap.

You also get lots of free tools etc. when registering your hosting plan.

Is it dangerous or risky to be on a shared server?

I have a whole bunch of domains and sites all on 1 web hosting plan (Hostgator) using a shared server. Is that a bad move?

I have heard that if you are on a shared server then if anyone uses bad SEO then you could be penalized. However, I don't know how valid that is.

I do have one site on a dedicated server. The host I'm with is hostica.com. So far, I am pleased with them. To be dedicated is like $2 bucks more a month so it seems worth it.

I'm on a 5 domain plan for $5 bucks a month. They have CPanel, Wordpress friendly, many more features, & responsive support (live & email). I would recommend them to anyone.

They helped me with htaccess, redirecting, & even file management.

You can read about dedicated servers at this wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dedicated_hosting_service

From my understanding, a dedicated server is an individual computer that only you use to run your website(s). I've never heard of leasing one for $2/month, generally the lowest I've seen is around $100/month (this is for an average configured Microsoft software server).

However, I've had some experience with dedicated hosting as the company I work for during the day has some dedicated servers that I assist in 'administering'. We are an all Microsoft shop (which means basically no Linux, MySQL, or PHP), but instead (IIS, Sql Server, and ASP.NET). The host we use is 1and1.com and they've been pretty good. You can get a good dedicated server that will run your website(s) for a long time for around $100 - $150/month. We've been up 100% of the time since we got the server six months ago.

However, to be honest, a dedicated server is only necessary if you are having any of the following:

* insane amounts of traffic
* mission critical website pages that cannot go down
* the need to manage programs that run on your server
* the need to directly access the server and configure it

If you just have a regular site, you can get away with a $5 to $25 dollar a month host and be just fine.

Any dedicated server that wants more then 80 bucks a month is way beyond market value. SBI is only about $25 a month and it's a dedicated web host.

We likely have different ideas of what a dedicated web host is, but that's okay. From my standpoint, a dedicated server is a separate, individual computer that I can remote directly into, configure, setup databases, create programs that execute, set options directly in IIS (the web server software), run multiple large company websites on, and allow for running ASP.NET and all the nerdy custom programming that I do while having a beefy hardware system (4 GB RAM, 3.0 Ghz Quad Core Processor, 240 GB hard drive RAID backed up) is a dedicated server (sorry for being so technical, lol). For me, I haven't found a good Windows dedicated server that's less than $100/month to lease.

If you know of any from companies of good reputation that are less than that ($100/month), please let me know, we could save a few dollars with them. Thanks!

Post Dedicaded Servers

O.K. Now I see. SBI is a Virtual Dedicated Server. Which can handle insane traffic and have full control however it's not a completely dedicated server.

I enjoy learning from other people and from what you've had to say. You've helped me learn a few things just from talking to you and I appreciate it.
