Question webpage archives

I was told recently that someone went to my Geocities website and was able to view pages that I have long ago removed. There were some things on those webpages that I did not want anyone to see but this person recited (verbatim) things that they could only know if they viewed those pages. Is this possible to view archived pages in Yahoo/Geocities? Please let me know because all the searching for a way to find out if this is possible is exhausting me. Thanks, thePrincess

Default It isn't hard in most cases

I am not familiar with Geocities specifically, but unless folders are password protected (check with your host on how to do it) you can easily find your way into most folders.

For example. You can right click on a page and then click "view source" on any page. That lets you find the name of the css file. Add that to your page address in the bar and look at the css file. Either the source page or css file will show you the file address of files referenced in any way in the page. Put that into your address bar and there you are.

In your case it is not hard to guess that a folder like "archive" would hold your files, then by looking at your usual file naming choices a lot of people with time on their hands will just try a few guesses and likely come up with your files even when not listed on your visible files.

If you don't want people to see stuff, better not leave it on line. That, or store it in protected folders with weird names. Even then, I wouldn't want to guarantee anything.

Good Success!

James

Unfortunately, I think there are archived snapshots of webpages even when you take it down from your server.

Contact the owner of a webpage that still shows your old pages and ask them to take it down... I am not sure if you will be able to get that done, but it's worth a try.

Do you know how this person was able to find the content of your old pages?

It sounds like this is a hassle for you... I hope everything is Ok.

The whole internet is being archived http://www.archive.org/index.php

And that is where he probably got your site from, there maybe some other place though. Any stupid thing you post in your blog will stay there for ever even once you delete it, most people find about it too late.
