Default Differences between hosts?

All hosts offer different services. The important thing is to plan a little first to determine what you might need.

Some charge for each domain, some (like mine, Dreamhost) let you have as many as you want. There is a wide variety of programs you may want to use. I made sure I could use php and mysql for example.

Try to determine what you may need. Think a little ahead, too. Plan for some growth. It isn't all that easy to more (I learned from experience, unfortunately). You will have to look at each host to see what they support.

Also, check out a few sources to see how reliable a prospective host is. This is difficult because there are a lot of unreliable critics out there badmouthing even some of the best.

Good success.

James

Well I'll give you links to the features that both web hosts offer.

Hostgator:

http://www.hostgator.com/shared.shtml

Godaddy

http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/default.asp (Select Web hosting from the hosting and servers tab, then click the link to compare plans)

These are the cheapest solutions that they have to offer I doubt you will need any extra features unless you are moderately big firm.

PHP is similar to HTML in simple terms its just more dynamic and allows you to do a little more with your website.

If you have a look on peoples websites they usually have /mypage.html

For php it will be /page.php

Its just a different format however it requires quite a lot of knowledge but both of Daddy and Gator have PHP support so when your ready and have learnt the basis of it you can perhaps integrate it into your site.

Web Terms

MySQL Database / PHPmyadmin = Complex database that is needed for blogs, forums, cms and also for storing peoples identification credentials and just general personal information. Just like a school class register at the start of the day but a little more vamped up

Python = A script that's allows you access to installing objects such as a sitemap.

SSH & SSL = Security features for looking after peoples information and protecting your visitors.

CGI = Required to install chat rooms, guest book, contact us forms.

I think those are the main ones, on Hostgator if you click the small blue question mark it tells you all about the different features.

I hope you find what you are looking for and I have'nt confused you to much.

Default O.K.

I'm gonna go with host gator they have a baby site, I'm gonna try. So now to a name,I have changed my mind about the teen name( I'm gonna add a message board for them ) For some reason, I can't get into the keyword thing ( Browser thing I think )
I'm still thinking, I posted for Lisa to help with a name, any suggestions from you ????? Inflammatory Breast Cancer Something, just can't get a "catchy " name in my head.

This is a very rare form of breast cancer, no-one knows much about it but people are dying every day from it,it is so rare there haven't been much research on it,but yet people are dying from it ( just lost my aunt 1 yr from diagnois and all pain and suffering) Doesn't make much since to me ??????

So I want to make people aware, have info avaliable and direct people to their site, sell items and donate the money to the research. So got any fancy names ? Mother said Imflammatory Breast CancerWhat.com.....but I can't check key words,,,,,thanks for taking me under you wing Debbie

Hey Debbie,

If I may put in a small request not to direct questions directly to me on the forum. Sometimes that prevents others from commenting if they think you only want to hear from me. And the whole purpose of this forum is so everyone can contribute. There are a lot of people here with helpful advice as well.

Here's another research tool...
http://www.goodkeywords.com/

I haven't used it yet but I know a few people that love it. Try that to see what you can come up with. As someone else said "breast cancer" is already going to make for a long domain but I think it's important you include it.

And if you want to include inflammatory then I'm not sure how "catchy" you're going to be able to get with so many important words.

InflammatoryBreastCancerFacts.com is available. It's long, yes but explains exactly what your site is about.

Default Thanks

OOPSS O.K. Sorry, I thought everyone would reply if they could help. Well I think I will use that name, since it covers everything and then branch from there. I understand that I should " register " a dot net version also. I think I'm possibly putting this together ( hopefully ), I'm going host gator, so I would get the .com ( domain ) and also register the .net ( with the same name ).........the .net would be like a general info and a few facts and then direct people to the main ( domain ) site........Please let this be right ?????? Thanks Debbie

So you are going to build two different sites on the .net and .com versions? May I ask why? I would just buy both domains and just redirect the .net version to the .com site. That way you only have content on one domain.

That's where i am getting confused. I'm going thru host gator ( baby ) .....I'm going to purchase the package on the 1st,so I want to at that time purchase both names.......com and .net thru host gator ? Maybe after I get the package and start moving, I'll understand a little more...............I really want to thank you and everyone here for being so patient with me,this is really important to me to start Thanks Debbie...............So maybe I'll gather all my information for the site and then when I get it,go from there.... Hang in there, you'll get it.

Usually if people buy the same name with two different extensions (.com and .net for example) they build content on one and use the other to redirect it and keep others from taking it.

For example 2createawebsite.com is my main site but I also own 2createawebsite.net Type that into your browser and see it redirects to my main site. The .net version is not hosted anywhere. It's just parked at my registrar so I don't pay any hosting for that domain.

So when you sign up with Hostgator you choose one domain to build your content on. The other domain you'll just setup to redirect to your main site. So let's say you register both names at godaddy.com. I believe they have free forwarding so you would just setup the .net to forward to the .com and then you'd host your .com site with Hostgator. So you're only building content on one domain. The other is just for redirect purposes.

GoDaddy do a cheaper domain names but the two companys are almost identical in prices, features its all down to personal preference.

However personally I would stick with Hostgator as you have it all in one and if you come across any problems they can assist you with them as you have everything registered with them.

But you could use Godaddy and Hostgator together just buy the domain from Godaddy and select the option in Godaddy to use your own domain and then change your name servers on your Godaddy domain control panel.

Default hostgater registration cost

Hostgater charges $15.00 per year for registration. Pretty high. You don't have to register where you host, so I don't think I would go that much, even though I pay almost $10 to stay with my host.

Go Daddy is advertising less than @2.00, no limit. Quite a difference.

Good success!

I actually use Go Daddy as well as a few other hosts, but not Host gator. I absolutely love Go Daddy even though I've heard people say that it's just for domain registration and not hosting. i wouldn't go with their "website tonight" option though. It's very limited.
