Default Hosting

Well I'm new to building a website but Id love to build a website where players can review video games, read reviews, read the latest news and talk about these games In the forums. How do I select a host to host that domain, does it have to be the same company that registered the domain?, Also, The hosting company I'm thinking about says so much monthly, but when Im at the order screen It adds it all up to the yearly price.

Thanks alot

Hi RoffleCopter,

You can register your domain name with a domain registrar of your choice and signup a hosting plan with other web hosting provider, both of them need not to be from the same company.

A little extra on your video game site, perhaps you can consider building it with open source program like joomla, mambo, drupal, phpnuke, many communities are using these open source cms as the community platform, and these open source programs are mostly php / mysql based, which is supported in most linux based web hosting plan.

Hope that helps

Thanks for your quick reply, I'm also really grateful for that advice, but on the domain company I've picked atm, the server is unmodifiable

My guess is that you might have chosen a web host that offer free domain name when signup for hosting plan (seeing your post that you can only pay yearly payment for the plan), I would suggest that you go through the web host's TOS carefully again so that you understand what you are getting when signup, and what you can take with you if you decide to leave the web host later.

I did read through the TOS, but I failed to realise this, guess I should of been a little more aware. But the domain wasn't free

in that case, I guess the best option of you is to send a ticket to the web host to see how they can help you through this.

Yeah, I know that expression probably dates me, but it makes a good point.

Since you describe what you want to do rather than the services you will need I thought I might just remind you of a basic principle. It is of primaty importance in planning to determine what you need first, then look for services.

In this case you want to figure out what programs you will use. The reference to php and MySQL above is a good example. Different hosts provide support for different programs. You don't really want to sign up for hosting with one provider only to find out later you have to move in order to do what you want to do. That can be expensive as well as inconvenient.

I agree with foong, lots of sites now use Content management systems for gaming related sites, purely because they take away the labour of making piles of content yourself, and give you lots of editable features and plugins. However the only catch in all this as James said you need PHP 4 + and MySQL databases compatible to install the scripts and package bundle. But i can assure its well worth and it seems like it would definitely fit in with what you had in mind.
