If you are using your own domain name, then it is ok to move around free or paid host, if you are planning to build your website with subdomains offered by free web host, then you will need to rebuild your traffic again (i.e search engine traffic, educate existing website visitors of the new site etc.) when you decide to go with paid hosting in future, this is because you will not be able to take the subdomain with you when you move to paid host

That is why I always advise people to register their own domain name whenever they want to start a website.

If you new to website building and you are not buying a hosting and built in tutorial package bundle such as SBI, you should definitely experiment with a basic free host but if you ever want to move make sure you keep backing up your content on your computer not just on there web server, im sure lisa will elaborate on the disadvantages of free hosting etc.

To start you off try, freewebs.com and bravenet.com get yourself familiar with making websites, you may not get much traffic but its more of a trial period to get to know your stuff use it as a tutorial, they may limit your tools etc such as database work but use what they provide you and slowly get into making your own site without there tools.

Once your filled with website building goodness go ahead and buy a hosting account and a .com domain and your on your way to success.

Good luck!
