I'd like this question answered by one of our boardie experts as I'm getting ready to start my own site. I know Lisa is very much against them due to her own experiences but equally I've heard some people also found it a good way to get started.

Large corporations own and manage their own data centers with all the hardware they need to go online. In fact, Google has created videos in the past that show you how it operates (to some degree).

For the rest of us, we use other company's hardware, such as HostGator or BlueHost, to house our web sites.

My IT guy is expanding his business and is the process of buying an independent server for his company and also his clients. My accountant has done the same thing. They like the independence and may have other reasons, but there is a big but here.

What is your percentage of up time?
What happens if there is a power failure?
What back up systems are in place?
How much information are you going to host?
What is your return on investment?

When $8 per month gets you 150 GB space and 1500 GB Transfer and $15 gets you unlimited it will cost anyone but the extreme user more for their own server.

Good question.
