Using Rentacoder for Site Design
I just read the article on 2createawebsite about rentacoder and I think this is what I will use until I can afford sbi. I just don't have the money for that right now and if i use rentacoder I can have someone build my site for me and I'll just do the updates.
I'm just a little confused on how it works and I'm not so certain about paying someone before the work is complete. Do I have to pay them upfront or can I wait?

Hi danaP,
You don't pay them until the job is complete. You put the money in an escrow account (setup by rentacoder) and you don't release the money until the coder is finished with the work.

Got it! Would you recommend them for site design?

Absolutely. I've seen a lot of bids on rentacoder for site designs or even site re-designs. I personally have never used them for that, but many people have.

So what's the deal with this, you pay people to build your site?

Rentacoder.com is a site that consists of hundreds (maybe even thousands) of programmers/coders and most of them make a living doing the jobs that people post.
So let's say you wanted a template design created for your site. You'd place your offer out there and describe what you need done. Within minutes coders from all over the world will begin bidding on your project. (You can specify the highest amount you'd pay if you want)
Once you see a bid you like, you send the money in escrow (so the coder can't access it) Then when s/he is done with your project you review it and then you release the money so they can be paid.
I love the site and have 4-5 different things done that I was not technically able to do.

I just realized they stopped accepting PayPal. That bites.

Wow, they claim to have over a 180,000 coders. Do they have to agree to start from scratch, or are they allowed to use modified open-source templates?
Why on earth would they stop accepting PayPal? That seems like it would hurt their revenue. :?

I think many of them use the modified open source templates.
I don't think it was their choice to stop accepting PayPal. From the looks of things it seems like PayPal stopped allowing transactions for some reason. I was not pleased when I found out. It's been a few months since I've used them. I was hoping the PayPal issue has been rectified by now. According to ppcfanatic, I guess not.

This means: 180,000 coders registered since May'2001
Say, there are 44,000 USA coders without any completed projects and 5,000 USA coders with at least one completed project.
The same situation with other countries.
How I get this info: I parse this list monthly

Cool, thanks for the info TakeReal and everyone else. So TakeReal are you the owner? Any info for why PayPal is not working for your site anymore. I really prefer to use that if I can.

895 projects completed via RentACoder
113 projects completed via GetAFreelancer
35 projects completed via Scriptlance
RentACoder is my favorite workplace, not my site.
Link to _my_ site and my projects is available in my profile.

May be your PayPal account not verified yet? Or "phone #" isn't correct.

Welcome TakeReal!
I have used Rentacoder several times and verified my PayPal and had several jobs completed with PayPal with no problem. The last couple of times I've bid there was a written notice saying they were not accepting PayPal anymore due to issues they had. So it had nothing to do with my account.
So you're saying you've never had problems? I hadn't even logged on with my PayPal info and I received this error.

outsourcing your project/website can me real money saver however you have to know few things before you hire someone.
1. Have a good understanding what you want.
This is important because if you can't communicate your requirements to your contractor he will have hard time meeting your demands. So, the more you make him change things later on the more its gonna cost you.
The process should be smooth. You tell him what you want and he delivers. But sometimes miscommunication can leave both parties frustrated.
2. Check your contractor's credentials. See if they are qualified.
There are enough people with civil engineering degree and high school diploma calling themselves programmers. You don't want that. You want someone who can back up their skills with a programming degree/diploma or/and equivalent experience.
3. Check their past projects.
See if they are capable of delivering what you're looking for. Best way to do that is see if they have finished a similar project as the one you require.
Outsourcing is a bliss for both the contractor (makes money is US dollars..and enjoys the conversion rate) and the client (saves money). But if not done correctly it could a real painful experience.
P.S. sorry this was just a bit off topic
