Hey everyone,

As I was redesigning my blog, I began to wonder about font and other sizes when it comes to designing HTML pages. Does any one have any opinions on the best measurement to use for such things as fonts, paddings, borders and margins?

Obviously the goal is to make a Web site look the same across browsers and monitor resolution, but what is the standard measurements to use?

Just curious.

I was faced with the same problem, after routing around on the net i found that still after new resolutions of screens have come out 800 x 600 is still the most popular resolution. You want to be sure to fit into 800 x 600 so work it from there. Text sizes i usually go from 11 - 13.

I usually develop my sites for 800x600, but I decided to go wider (900px) on my new redesign. It appears that 8% of my visitors are at 800x600 resolution and the majority now seem to use 1024x768. I may lose some of those 8%, and I have accepted that.

I agree with the text sizes. I take it you mean in points? A larger text size makes the site easier to read for those who have difficulty reading small text.

The other question is what are people using for measurements: pixels, points, or em?

I use px x px simply cause others do for pictures, tables etc. Is it worth getting a blog these days? I'm undecided whether to get one?

I think it still is, but managing it is just like any other Web site. There is so much support out there for bloggers, and you need to keep updating it on a frequent basis.

Search engines also index blog content very quickly on a regular basis. The day after I publish a post, Google sends me an alert indicating that that page has been added to its index.

I figure blogging is free to do (Blogger, WordPress) so you really don't have anything to lose.

Sorry to hi-jack you thread, im always doing it. Il bring it back to topic. Have you decided what measurements your going for? I think the bigger you content is on a blog its more easier to read. I hate blogs with small big blocks of writing, i get past the intro and then press the red x on Internet explorer.

No problem about hi-jacking the thread. You have made valid points that are all part of measurements in a blog.

I don't have a problem with small fonts on a blog, at least until my eyes start to go. In my current layout I am using em as a measurement which doesn't allow me to specify a certain font size in points, but apparently is meant to scale better.

For my new layout I am staying with points. I believe the text is 9pt, which isn't too small, then again everyone has their own opinion.

You really have to take into consideration the number of people in the world with bad eyesight. XD Furthermore, people don't like to read on a screen that much--making the text too small is a big mistake. It's better your text be too big than too small--trust me.

For verdana and arial, 10 pt. Definately. -firm nod-
