Thumbs up Got a new toy

Ohmygoodness! My new Wacom Bamboo Fun Tablet was delivered yesterday. I think I'm in luv.

It loads without a hitch in Vista. I use Gimp graphic software. (free open source) Gimp saw it right away, and I was able to do a sketch immediately. I love being able to use the stylus like a pencil and just sketch away. I had taught myself how to use Gimp with the mouse, and that took some getting use to, and it took time to get the piece looking right, but now...ooohh, the possibilities.

It's so sleek and portable. It almost seems too small for something so powerful. Does anyone here have one? What do you think about it? What do you use it for?

No, I don't have one, but looked at these several years ago...I do a lot of video editing and conduct a lot of image cutouts which are extremely hard to do with a mouse. Someone mentioned these things and would love to have one. Enjoy!!

I have a non-Wacom tablet. I don't find I use it as much as I thought I would, but it's partly laziness. It is good for making a digital signature rather than writing it on paper and then scanning. I think you've inspired me to dust it off and give it some more use!

Ooh yes, they're great! I've recently got an Intuos 4, moving on from the Graphire 2 I've had for quite a few years now. I particularly hate using Photoshop without it, though I switch to it for anything remotely mouse-intensive.

Like SgtMac66, I've been doing quite a bit of video post work recently, mainly grading and adding shiny bits in After Effects. I'd originally assumed that tablets were commonly used in that world too, but none of the people I've spoken to seem to have one. Some popular plugins like Magic Bullet Looks and Colorista don't work properly with a tablet, which really surprised me.

One warning / piece of advice I would give is don't try an Intuos tablet unless you're prepared to buy one. Because, much as the smaller tablets are great, you'll want to upgrade...

Good for you Dee. I use the Intous4 large. And have been using the Wacoms for all of my graphic work since the Wacom Artpad 2 I did upgrade to the Cintiq series for a few days but was just not sold the price tag was really worth it. I don't know much about the Bamboo series. It just seemed that the features where limited on it for what I use. I do think though that for someone who has never used a Wacom the Bamboo is a good cheap way to get your feet wet until you find out if you like it or not. If you do decide that you like it I would look at upgrading to the Intous4 series when you can afford the jump. The added features are well worth the price. And I hear that they are now supplying added software as well.
