Ah James thank you for your suggestion! I have been having a great time on html.dog! Well can I ask your advice on this?

I'm writing my content which is for a backpacker website, I have pictures and info for Australian backpackers. Should I create the whole page in notepad to start with? ( as I said earlier I have been working in microsoft word, but am now looking to transfer over to notepad) Like colours, logo's, boarders, pictures? Can I still make something that looks awesome in notepad? Or do I need the services of an experienced web developer who uses dreamweaver. I have a hosting package with website tonite that I have been using just to muck around and get a feel for using a site, but now with html its opened a whole new door!

Any tips or feedback would be treasured!

Thank you!

Default You can do it.

You can do it yourself if you want. And the truth is you do not want it to be too extravagant.

Since you are using notepad I would suggest downloading NoteTab. It is a simple text editor to replace notepad but has simple menu lists on the left side that put the code in for you. For example, select a paragraph and click on "Paragraph block" or the paragraph symbol and the opening tag <p> and ending tag </p> will all be added around the paragraph for you.

There are lots of other things to speed up your work but still allowing you to be working directly on your code. I started with it and decided I liked working that way better than the graphical interface so have never gone on to Dreamweaver or anything else.

If you want some additional help, many have found it very helpful to download a template like one of Lisa's, study it, and develop your site by modifying it.

There is no one right way. Everyone learns their own way. You just keep moving your site forward until you get it like you want.

Just start over and enter your text, etc., directly into your editor. Do not cut and paste from Word unless you know for sure that you are not transfering unseen stuff (I do it sometimes but I usually do a "paste special," "paste unformatted text."

With the html and css you are learning on htmldog.com you can make the borders, etc., and insert the images that you want.

Just copy the plein text (nothing else) in wordpad or word and paste it in the SOURCE CODE.
I use Kompozer and NVU (both FREEWARE), which is basically the same program BUT in Kompozer you can see the outline of the videos (from YouTube) and the OUTLINE of the building blocks of your site.

Open Kompozer and just click on SOURCE at the bottom. Then you can see the code. Just paste in carefully your text and click on Normal to see the page. You can always adjust going back to the source if you like and punch in some html code to adjust your text.

BUT you have to put the images into the page using Kompozer or NVU (or other html editor)
Don't put them into Word or Notepad first..this will not work.

Ok guys thank you for your assistance and patience with me!

So in the context of my travellers website can I explain what I understand so far?

All my travel info will go into my html doc.

then when I want to add my pictures, background color, and anything else that looks cool I will create a CSS doc and link it to my html doc?

Whats the best way to convert my travel pics to JPEG's?

Also the look and feel that I came up with in Microsoft word was nice and smooth but how do I transfer that into code? I have been able to do it alittle bit, but it doesn't look as nice or personalised?

I'm just curious on your opinions of the large amount of free CSS & html templates that are downloadable on the web - what do you guys think about them? Are they worth using and just inserting my content?

Also, is website tonite kinda like the McDonalds of website hosting? Becasue I have created a reasonable looking site but without even knowing what html is! But after your suggestions to get into codes I now feel like I am really starting to crack open the basics with learning things like html & css.

Is there such a thing as a super awesome magic code?! That makes everything look radical?

I'm very excitede and happy to be learning more about these aspects of web creation! And although I feel alittle swamped Im content with where things are at for now!

Thank you!

To insert an image, just open up Kompozer and go to Image at the top menu.
Click on it and find the image in your folder, then click on it open it and click OK..it will show up on your page.

Use GIMP (freeware) to convert images and to create and change graphics.

I suggest building the content of your website and drveing targeted traffic to your establishment. Targeted traffic, will convert much higher than just generic traffic from different places.
