Lakesman
Hi everyone,
I hope that I`m posting in the right area.
I`ve just joined and have a question that is so basic it may give you all a laugh and make me kick myself when someone solves my problem.
I am trying to create website content on my own without using ready made templates and found the free html editor here. I have tried twice to open the editor after downloading it without success. The instructions keep taking me round in circles without opening the editor. Any ideas anyone?
A general comment on a broader topic. I am partially sighted and had the dickens of a job reading the verification code when registering, I had to refresh the code six or seven times before I could decipher the symbols.
I understand the reason for the verification but why does it have to be SO faint, why can`t there be more contrast between the background colour and the symbols? I can`t be the only person who has difficulty reading the things.
I`m not usually a forum person but everyone seems to be helpfull and SO positive which is a trait that I love. I hope that I can contribute in some way.
Regards,
Lakesman

I know exactly how you feel, those verification CAPTCHA thingy codes are really annoying, I got a IP suspension on a website signup for a free forum because I typed it in wrong so many times.
Your saying that you cannot open up the free software program you downloaded to open your template?
Have you installed it? If so then have you restarted your computer? If you have done both then Try re-downloading and re-installing and then restart your computer again, if the problem persists try downloading from a different source and follow the steps. If none of the following help, I don't know what to say.
Good Luck and have fun.
AND welcome to Website Babble!

Welcome and glad to have you with us.
Lakesman
I appreciate your deciding to jump in and start participating in this forum. As someone who has worked with people who have to deal with physical challenges of one kind or another all of my life I am happy to encourage you in raising some of these questions.
Making websites accessible is becoming a major concern for many site builders. We have not had a great emphasis here, however, and I know many of us are sympathetic with the need for us to keep it in mind as we develop our sites.
Let me say that I also greatly appreciate your attitude toward building your own site from scratch. I know that Lisa and a lot of others learn best, they say, from taking a template and learning how it works. Personally, I like the idea of starting simply and learning how to do it as you go. That way I thoroughly understand what I have and how it works. That way it is easy to make changes and adjustments.
It might help if you could tell us which editor you are talking about and what questions or issues are stalling you out.

Hi again,
Well, that WAS a quick response but it emphasises my point about helpful people. I had also forgotten about the time difference between the UK and the US.
I`m sorry, I should have been more precise. I had downloaded `The 2easyhtml editor` from Lisa`s site and just couldn`t get it to open beyond the second stage, it just kept taking me back to the previous stage.
Since then , I`ve slept and, have downloaded it again and have managed to open it. I now `only` need to work out how to use it but at least I am a step further forward.
Thanks for the support so far.
Regards,
Lawrence

Reason: Deleting website address to comply with site rules and to avoid my babble entries showing up on websearces for my site.

I would maybe try and use Kompozer Lisa mentioned it to me and other people and so far so good. Ill post link in a second, let me find it.
Update -Link: http://www.kompozer.net/
Try that program and the one your using to see which you like best. I would also download the free trial for the Adobe Dreamweaver and try that program also.
Good luck with the software

Put it in your signature
Lawrence
Your website or affiliate links are not allowed in your post, but you can use the signature add on to put something like that if you wish.
Just click on "User CP" (top left on the menu bar), then under settings and options click on "Edit Signature." You have up to four lines to write whatever you wish, including your site address, and it will all appear at the bottom of each post.
BTW, I'm curious about the name you chose, Lakesman. I ask because I live in Minnesota, the "Land of 10,000 Lakes."

Hi James,
I`m saying this for no other reason than to answer your question but, if you look at my website you will see that I live on the Northern edge of the English Lake District which is a National Park in the UK, rather like a miniature Yellowstone, and a fabulous area where I do a lot of hiking to clear my head and get away from `life` for a while hence the username.

Hi Lakesman,
Don't get me started on that editor. LOL The person that developed that software for me has stopped responding to my emails. GRRRR I've learned it's not very compatible with Vista so I'm thinking of discontinuing it altogether.
Have you tried Komposer or Nvu? They are free editors.

I would strongly suggest Kompozer if you cannot afford DreamWeaver (my situation) Kompozer is very nice to use until you can get a better program like DreamWeaver. Good luck with your website.

James,
This is nothing to do with anything on the forum but I was reminded of you tonight by an item on the National TV news here in the UK earlier this evening.
For 18 months a French conservationist has been teaching an orphaned American Eagle to fly after it was raised in a zoo. Earlier today he took the eagle to the top of Mont Blanc, let it stand on its own feet and then paraglided from the top of the mountain. The bird followed him, flying on its own for the first time, it even landed on his outstretched arm for a rest during the flight. It was simply fantastic to see.
I love flight and would have given my eye teeth to be up there with him and the bird.

Catching up
Hello everyone,
Life has a way of imposing its own priorities over mine so I`m only just able to reply to the various responses to my query, thanks to all of you who replied.
Lisa, I can understand you being exasperated with the easy2html. i don`t have anything like your experience but if it had been in a tin I would have thrown it in the river after the first attempts at getting it to work.
Anyway, I`m calmer now and have had a good look at Kompozer, thanks again to Lellieis1, James and Lisa for recommending it. I will be taking this further asap.
James, thanks for your comments. My father always used to say to me `draw me a picture` when he was trying to get me to explain something. it was his way of making me think about something from a different angle. To this day I often only need to look at a schematic to understand how something mechanical works. Note that I said `mechanical`, I am hoping that this approach will also work with my website.
Because of my eyesight I have to live away from home during my working week with my `ordinary` job but I want to develop my main interest, coaching, so that I can work from home and spend more time with my wife which is why I am looking to develop my own site.
I realised recently that I had explored SBI a while go, before I became more serious about building a business from home. At the time it seemed an expensive way to register a domain name but now, having looked more closely at it I can see that it would be a great advantage to internet beginners because it appears to provide everything in one package, together with the training to do it which is what frightens off many newcomers.
Thanks again all of you, talk soon.
Lawrence
