Very good questions and I think that's a problem many people have. If you are trying to promote something it's best to start the article out with some useful information.
For example, let's say you are promoting one of those keyword tools that help people find profitable niches. You'd first start off by telling your audience the importance of finding good keywords. Do some research and explain to them what numbers are best and how important it is to be ranked on the first page in Google, etc. Inform them without mentioning the product so by the time you get to the recommendation they understand why they need such a tool.
So at the end of the article you make a nice recommendation. And if you use the product, all the better because you can give personal benefits of why you like it.
What is happening here is that you are giving your visitors helpful information first and they'll appreciate that. Then by the time they get to the recommendation it will make sense to them exactly how this product will fit their needs and they are more likely to consider buying.
Now of course there are other variables. You have to make sure this is a product your audience would really value. If you can't seem to make sales then maybe you are off base on selecting products of interest.
When I first started 2createawebsite, I kept promoting "how to make money online with a website" products and didn't make a sale because most people were coming to my site looking for a free host or a cheap host. So once I started offering different products that match my audience's needs, my sales increased. You have to know your audience.
Also, every page on your site should not attempt to sell products. Some pages should just be information. That way when your visitors are browsing they are not getting the impression you are just trying to get them to buy something on every single page.
And keep in mind this technique may be considered as underselling to some but you'll get a lot more sales than just coming across and saying "Buy this product now!"
