Default How Much to Charge for Site Building

Hello All,

I have been building personal sites for a couple of years and now I am getting interest from others to build their sites. I am interested in how much to charge for this service.

Currently I build several kinds of sites - static (using html, css, and java) and dynamic (using html, css, java, MySQL, php and Flash). I would like to know what other webmasters are charging for their services.

Cheers,
Seth

Hi SHOverine. Welcome to the forum.

Me personally, I like to charge by the hour. The reason being is that some customers will continue to make changes to what you are doing for them and it could drag out for a long time if you don't set some boundaries. Don't be afraid to lose their business or they may milk you for all of your time.

I also set a minimum amount of hours because I know that a decent site will take me about 2 weeks to get close to completion.

So to finally answer your question, I usually charge between $12 - $16 an hour. I've been told that my prices are too low, but with the amount of competition out there, you have to stay competitive. You should also take your skill level into consideration. There are times when someone wants something I can not do at the time. So I consider that getting paid to learn a new skill. Your lower price will also earn your customers patience if you don't finish when you say you will. At that point you really should be working for free anyway.

That's how I do it, but I am interested to know how others are doing it.

Thanks Alpha7. Do you design static or dynamic pages? Also, I am assuming that you are passing all hosting charges along - is this correct?
