Default I want to build a website to sell information!

Hi: I just posted this under new members but will post here as well.

I want to build a website to sell information only, not a product. This site will start on page 1, which I will have my sales pitch on it and the price of the information that I am selling the information for. At the bottom of page 1, there will be the standard e-commerce fill in forms such as a credit card and number, the person’s name etc.

When the credit card is approved and accepted, then and only then, the website will go on to the next pages where all my information is that I am selling. At this time, the customer can read this information and/or print or copy it they want to.

Again it is most important that the reader of this website cannot get to this information ‘for sale’ until after the give me a credit card number.

I might be wrong but I think this is the only way to sell information on the internet and make sure that you still get paid.

I really do not want to learn HTML programming if I do not have to but I will if that is the only way. I would rather use one of the many website building software programs out there where I could set up my website with out the programming knowledge.

Questions:
(1) How does one go about setting up the first page to do the above as descried? (2) If it can’t be done the way described in the above, do you know of another way to sell information on the internet and get paid for it?
(3) Is there any software programs out there that I can buy that will do this or am I going to have to learn HTML?

Thank you,
proqmbm

Hi proqmbm,

First of all, I think you may be getting ahead of yourself a bit. In order to convince people to give you their credit card info, whether it's for information, product, etc. you have to create some kind of credibility and warm them up to the sale.

So creating a page with a sales pitch and then asking for a credit card at the end is jumping the gun.

Let's say you are selling a package that teaches someone how to buy a used car. Rather than creating a page with your sales pitch, it would be better to create a site with lots of free information on car-buying. Once that information gets found in the search engines that free, useful content sort of PREsells your "paid information" and you build your credibility.

Were you just planning on selling this information or were you also planning on having more on your site than just a sales page?

As far as setting up the page you could use an editor (Nvu is free) and to collect the payment you could use PayPal or any other online payment system. But hopefully with a site like this you are planning on creating more than just a one-page sales pitch.

I agree with Lisa 100%

However, what you are describing could be done. It sounds like you are describing the kind of product that would be available on Clickbank (http://www.clickbank.com).

In order to succeed with this type of product, you would have to:

1) create a separate website to pre-sell that product (Lisa described this in detail).

or 2) you would hope that affiliates at Clickbank would find your product intriguing and would start promoting the product for you. But in this case, you would have to sign up as a merchant with Clickbank (only $50) and you would split your commission with the affiliate. You determine how the commission is split.

My vote is to stick to what Lisa recommended.

Please do not hesitate with follow-up questions.

This is self promotion and against the rules. Feel free to promote your site in your sig file (Go to UserCP) but posting a message with the sole purpose of promoting your site is spam/self promotion.

Default the easy way

First everything they said before this is the right way and the best way. BUT the easiest way to do what your asking is to make the sales page and HOPE it makes them swipe their card although it is not as easy as it sounds, that's why Lisa is totally correct in a content first site, but the easy way is to create the sales page make a buy now button through paypal and after they swipe the card it sends them to a thank you page and on that page you have links set up to your content pages..You have to instruct them to save the URL of the thank you page..
