You upload the module archive to your home/public_html/modules Drupal installation directory and the unarchive it there. Now it should appear in the modules section of the administration menu for you to activate and custom

Sorry vlad11 but I have to correct this. You should never install anything in the /module folder because this contains only the core Drupal modules which could be wiped out or overridden with a subsequent upgrade to Drupal.

The official way of installing custom modules to a Drupal system is by creating a folder called /modules inside of <drupal home>/sites/all/ and then put the module files in there.

As an example this is how it would look on my system:

www/sites/all/modules/fckeditor
www/sites/all/modules/imce
....

Similarly you would install a template in

www/sites/all/templates/mytemplate
...

If you have downloaded the module from the drupal site you have to unarchive it because it would be in .tar.gz format. If you're on windows you can do this with WinRAR which is a freeware program which can handle this archive format.

I hope this helps!

Probably you would be safe and maybe it wouldn't be overwritten, but the rule is that if a system has a safe way of separating user contributed extensions then that is the way one should go about extending the system.

It will definitely benefit you in the long run and keep you away from nasty surprises.

You have to create local server 1st and test everything here and than upload all yr data or new modules to your host server.

sites/all/ < -- create a folder named modules and copy all yr new modules in that folder it's look like www/sites/all/modules/yourmodule

after this you have to enable it from admin panel
yourwebsite.net/admin/build/modules <-- here you can enable your module

hope this will help
