Best HTML Editor
OK I am using FrontPage and it works great for me but I understand it is being replaced by Microsoft's new program that comes with Vista. I want to help my family and friends create their websites so I was wondering which program you guys would recommend for a beginner. I don't want to recommend FrontPage since they are phasing that product out. I know a lot of people use Dreamweaver but it is very pricey.

i use to use frontpage but switched to dreamweaver after discovering that. I'm not sure of any other HTML editors since i haven't used anything esle other than FrontPage or Dreamweaver. Others here should be able to recommend some good free or not so costly editors.

Coffee Cup has both an html editor and a visual site editor (it's supposed to be a little easier to use). Personally, I've never used the html editor, but from what I hear it's the best out there. I think they give a free trial if you want to give it a spin first.

Thanks everyone. I really like coffeecup. I think I'll buy it after my trial is up.

When I started writing HTML back in January, I needed to do everything on the cheap. I found some freeware on download.com called LopeEdit Lite. No doubt I'll graduate to something more powerful when my budget permits, but it's working pretty well for me.

And I'm so glad CoffeeCup now allows you to edit in design mode. That was a pain in the you-know-what that you could only edit in code mode.

I have been using Nvu/kompozer for all my editing on my computer but when it comes to make minor changes I just do that on server so that I do not have to upload the changes.

My favorite has to be Notepad++. It's free, easy to use, responsive and highlights the code. I do have Adobe Dreamweaver that I used when I first started. I think the software is amazing and highly recommend it. I also edit directy on the server the majority of the time using the editor built into cPanel. It stops the need for using an FTP client.

Notepad++ or HTML-kit.
But then, I actually know html down to it's roots and don't require a WYSIWYG editor to do the coding for me. The end result is always a more readable code that I can modify without much issue. Whereas DW and it's ilk never produce readable code and most times produce lines of code that are not needed though they will never be as bad as MS Word for doing that.
Cheers,
Ron

I use either Notepad++ or Dreamweaver. Notepad++ is reliable and it's free!

I noticed that Frontpage does create a lot of empty lines of code. I figured it did not make any difference. Should I try to remove them?

I love notepad++ (tabs and line numbers are such a life saver when programming).
I also use it to do all my HTML layout. You just get such smaller tighter code when you hand craft it.
