I want a left sidebar (nav) on my template so I'll need to code to make it happen. I just wondering if you ever had to move your sidebar on your page and if you had any success.

Oh sorry I see.
Yeah I started off with the default Wordpress template. I already had my website so I added most of the bits from my website to the template including my sidebar.
Are you looking to move your existing sidebars?
Looking at your blog you have many options. You could
- create a new nav bar
- move the middle nav bar to the left of the content
- combine both of your nav bars into one giving more room for content
- combine both nav bars into one and add a new nav bar on the left of your content

Yes to all of the above. I thought I could combine the two nav bars but I can't seem to make it happen through my regular WP options and I'm unable to delete only one of the nav bars.
So, one nav bar on the left or would be wonderful as I'd like to be able to add affiliate ads to the right. Also, in creating the left nav, I'd like a hierarchy as the one built in doesn't work as I expected.
The more I think about this, the easier I think it will be if I can get outside of the WP stylesheet. Can I create a brand new CSS just for my navs and somehow disable the WP navs? Or is that too easy?

I'm a Notepad coder too. Once you get use to it, it's hard to break away. But I like Dreamweaver (Expensive) and CoffeeCup HTML Editor (Affordable).

Started with frontpage. Loved it as a beginner as it allows you to create things fast.
Then my computer crashed and I didn't have it anymore so I had to learn html, then css. I think that was the best thing that could happen... Now I know how to do (simple) things by myself. I would never have been able to learn anything with frontpage, although I tried, because they added so many unnecessary codes all around!
I do use coffeecup now and it does help to have the colours and the useful tags at hand!

Although I do use Dreamweaver a lot these days, I think that it's vital to know hot to hand-code. I used Notepad for many years and still think that the basic skills that I learned by doing so have stood me in good stead.

Being that my first "real" job was at a web design shop as a code monkey, it warmed my heart to see Khoi Vinh, Design Director for the NY Times state that they still write HTML code by hand. Of course, I have to believe that he was referring to templating and such, as there is no way they could maintain or deliver that amount of content without some kind of CMS.
It's our preference to use a text editor, like HomeSite, TextPad or TextMate, to "hand code" everything, rather than to use a wysiwyg (what you see is what you get) HTML and CSS authoring program, like Dreamweaver. We just find it yields better and faster results.
At my company we've been through this ordeal several times, finally settling in on PHP templates for the corporate site and Atlassian's Confluence for our developer sites. The corporate site still requires manual code intervention but we're modularized enough where the risk vs. reward is still OK. I'm waiting for Matt Asay to give me the green light on the Alfresco web product before we move to a full blown CMS. He knows that I am a difficult customer.
In the meantime I continue to enjoy/loathe our blog system here at CNET that requires us to format HTML. I like the control versus other blog tools, but it gets a little onerous................................

I prefer to use the software for the general layout... It gives shape to what you are thinking very effectively.. Then I enjoy refining it with hand codes...
It really saves a lot of time this way...

I used Design Software to Create the site. The down side was, the Developer needed designs to explain how each part of the site worked. 700hr's worth of designing, 300hrs+ developing with html, ruby on rails, sql. The upside, we only spent nz$2000 due to his initial quote. Otherwise, it would have cost $50 per hour x 300hrs around $15000 for Developer costs.
