Question FTP Question.

I have used Filezilla and CoreFTP for when me and friends have had gaming servers, but what exactly would you need and FTP client for web design and do you necessarily need one?

Think of webdesign the same as loading maps or mods for your gaming servers. With out FTP you have to go through the cpanel to add files and sometimes , ok most of the time, that is just a pain in the butt.
When loading maps on a server they usually have their own folder they go into other wise you end up with a jumbled mess on the server. A website is the same way. Just instead you place the files in the appropriate folder. Typically public_html

Ok cool. So basically, if I was to edit a site in Dreamweaver, I would save it and upload it through an FTP client?

You wouldn't have to but it would be alot easier. You could always use the cpanel to upload.
Cpanel is like the gameservers.com web innerface for adding files to a server. It works just not the easiest way to do it.

You can try Adobe Dreamweaver to edit or make a design and upload your design through FTP.

FTP is File Transfer Protocol that deals in transferring files between computers. It uses a separate port-number [21] and has a different method of communicating compared to regular browsing [i.e. http].

FTP client is useful to transfer a large number of files to your website hosting server easily. It usually has a good user interface and can help to take backups of your site too.

CuteFTP is a very intuitive prog, that I used years ago, and have now gone back to. Try it - you can download a 30 day trial for free.

All best,

Dreamweaver has a built in FTP client.
So does windows. (command prompt> type ftp
if you use cpanel it's very difficult to move entire directories.

I use FTP everytime I need to upload a new file to the server where my website is hosted. I use it several times a week. Often I am updating plugins that have been upgraded. I use Wordpress. If you want to see my site, I think you can see it by clicking on my name. It is the LA Progressive
